Take Part In The 64th Annual Seafair Wallingford Family Parade & Festival

Kirby Lindsay

For over 60 years Wallingford has hosted one of the longest running Seafair parades, formerly known as the Kiddie Parade.  Now neighborhood organizations, the Wallingford Chamber of Commerce and the Wallingford Community Senior Center, have teamed up to continue this traditional, family-favorite on Saturday, July 6th at 11a!

As the festivities grow and expand, organizers have renamed it the ‘Wallingford Family’ parade and festival to reflect the emphasis on the collective neighborhood family that participates: neighbors, business, organizations, and schools.

The Wallingford Family Parade will be held July 6th, 2013, and, unlike the FAC Solstice Parade, allows printed words! Photo provided by Wallingford Chamber

This official Seafair Sanctioned Community Event invites organized groups to participate, as well as neighborhood families.  The theme this year is ‘Wild For Wallingford!’ and the Parade Grand Marshal is the Woodland Park Zoo Asian Small-Clawed Otter.

A Family Festival will also take place, from Noon – 5p, on July 6th at the Meridian Playground, adjacent to the Good Shepard Center.  The community based festival will feature local craft and food vendors, demonstrations, live music and, of course, plenty of activities for kids.

For more information about participating, or attending this excitingly reenergized event (and seeing an otter as Grand Marshal…) contact Victoria Dzenis at 206/632-0645 or events@wallingfordchamber.org

Meet The Ensembles At the McKay Artists Reception May 22nd

Kirby Lindsay

On Wednesday, May 22nd, from 7p – 9p, the Fremont Arts Council will host a wine-and-cheese reception for the artist’s selected as winners of this year’s Dave McKay Grants at the Fremont Abbey Arts Center, lower floor.

Celebrate the art of parade making and hear the plans of some of the Solstice artists for their ensembles for 2013.  The 25th Solstice Parade promises to be bigger and better than ever, and the artists already have big ideas to share – and volunteers to recruit.  Come be inspired, or find something that you want to give time to see realized!

Also, Solstice Parade Photographers will show their work and documentation from parades past at the reception on May 22nd at 7p.  For anyone who wants to become a Parade Photographer for 2013, the MANDATORY safety meeting will take place on Saturday, June 15th at 9a at the Powerhouse (3940 Fremont Ave N.)  Only a limited number (50) of passes will be distributed to photographers wishing to capture the color and celebration from the street.  Anyone who wants to become an official Solstice Parade photographer – and can attend the mandatory meeting on June 15th – also must fill out a press pass agreement.

For more information, send questions to parade@fremontartscouncil.org or visit the FAC website.

This Saturday, May 18th, the Fremont Arts Council invites everyone to stop by their playhouse, The Powerhouse (3940 Fremont Ave N,) for an Open House of the parade building studio.  From Noon – 4p, Solstice Parade staff and volunteers will be on-hand to show off the studio, showcase ensembles already begun (and ready for volunteers,) and help visionaries launch their own ensemble for the Solstice Parade coming up on June 22nd at 3p.

In addition to the Open House, at 1p on May 18th, Maque da Vis will be leading a special, open discussion entitled, ‘Parade? What Were We Thinking?’  da Vis has studied this genre of performance art, as well as being an active participant in many, many, too many years of the Solstice Parade.  Come hear a brief historical review, a highly cursory differential of what a parade is (the types of, whys of, and rebellions for,) and about the FAC Solstice Parade in particular.  If you like, come dressed in parade attire!

Kirby Lindsay

Only two weeks are left in the limited run (through May 26th) of Frank Olivier’s ‘Twisted Cabaret & Pandemonium Vaudeville’ at Hale’s Palladium.  Pick your day and get tickets now so you don’t miss out!

“Laugh out loud! If demented vaudeville is a religion, this man is a high priest!” – San Jose Mercury News

Tickets can be purchased through Stranger Tickets for this hilarious, action packed cabaret of amazing feats of magic, knife-throwing, juggling, burlesque, acrobatics and, possibly, the only unicycle ballet through the website, at a cost of $14 – $35.  Shows run at 7:30p on Thursdays, 7:30p & 10:30p on Friday & Saturdays, and 3p on Sundays.

See Olivier pull off the show of his life – performing sixteen acts by himself with only the assistance of his loyal hunchback Flynch (played by Paul Nathan.)  This all takes place in the back of Hale’s Brewery, the home of Moisture Festival, with snacks and fine microbrews (including the Twisted Cabaret Ale) for sale during the show.

This will be the final two weeks to see this show in Seattle!  Check it out while you still can get tickets…

Ribbon Cutting of New Chase Bank Branch in Fremont

Kirby Lindsay

This Friday, May 17th, a celebration will be held of the official opening of the newest branch of Chase – at 3400 Fremont Avenue North.  At 9:30a, a Fremont Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting will take place of the 212th Chase branch to open in Washington State.

The 3000+ square foot branch will employ 10 people full time in a central location offering a full range of services including checking accounts, savings accounts, business banking, mortgages, investment products and advisors.

Additionally, this will be one of the first bank branches to offer customers the option of using the next generation in ATMs.  The Automatic Teller Machines at the Chase Fremont branch allows customers to request ‘custom denominations.’  These machines can dispense bills ranging from $1 – $100, and will be able to dispense coins – a service due to be piloted here soon and eventually rolled out nationwide.  This ATM will also offer customers the ability to pay credit card bills and load Chase pre-paid cards with cash.

“Chase has vast experience in helping consumers and businesses with their financial needs and our branch is proud to be the newest addition to the Fremont community,” said Chase District Manager, Brittany Taylor.  This branch will be open from 9a – 6p Mon – Fri, and 9a – 1p on Sat.  The branch will also have safe boxes available for rental, and a conference room available for community use pending permission from the branch manager.

To learn more about Chase, and meet the newest additions to Fremont’s business community, visit during the ribbon cutting on Friday, May 17th at 9:30a – or anytime thereafter!
