On May 5th, at the Woodland Park Zoo, the Assam Rhino Reserve will open and the public will have the first of many opportunities to meet Taj, our newest neighbor.  This new special exhibition will showcase Asian brown tortoises, demoiselle cranes and two rhinos – the first of their species to live at Woodland Park in its 100+ year history.

Taj came to Fremont from San Diego, where he was born.  His new roommate, Glenn, will be coming from Columbus.  Both will be 18-months-old when they greet the public at Woodland Park, old enough to be weaned from their mothers, but too young to start their own families.  Both juvenile rhinos will weigh about 1,500 pounds, but are still growing and when fully matured they will reach between 4,000 and 5,000 pounds apiece.

The rhinos are iconic symbols of the wildlife trafficking crisis, and an opportunity for the Zoo to help with conservation and preservation of this important species.  Read more about Taj and Glenn, and the Assam exhibit, on the WPZ blog (click here.)  Learn even more about them, and see these fascinating new neighbors, by visiting the Zoo on May 5th!
