With the arrival of spring, it is time once again to register for Woodland Park Zoo’s exotic, highly-coveted composts.  The annual Fecal Fest kicks off today, March 6th, with sign-ups accepted through March 27th.

The Zoo has composed a set of fertilizers, bedspread, and composts, using the unique access they have to the waste of the non-primate herbivores, and other exotic animals.  The special recipes the scientists at the Zoo comes up with for these products are a boon to gardeners, for growing veggies and annuals.

  • Zoo Doo – a long revered product developed from the feces of hippos, giraffes, mountain goats, tapirs and more – can be purchased in containers of 5, 10, 20 and 50 gallon sizes, along with truck loads.  Due to the high demand, fans must enter on-line to win a chance to purchase this product.  Prices vary by amount, ranging from $5 for five gallons to $80 for an 8’ x 4’ truck bed load.  Pint-sized buckets are available for $4.95.
  • Bedspread – a premium composted mulch combining Zoo Doo, sawdust, and wood chips – is available by the truck load.  Like the Zoo Doo, bedspread must be won by online entry, and prices vary from $40 for a 6’ x 3’ truck bed to $60 for an 8’ x 4’ truck.
  • Worm Doo – worm castings made from Zoo Doo and coffee grounds – can be purchased in pints.  This private reserve, exceptionally rich soil can be acquired, starting today, in pint-sized buckets.  These cost $10 and can be purchased, along with pints of Zoo Doo, in the ZooStore.
