At their June 29th meeting, the Rotary Club of Fremont welcomed representatives from the World Harmony Run. This global torch relay, founded by Sri Chinmoy, has visited more than 140 nations since it began in 1987. The slogan of the run is ‘Harmony begins with me,’ and the relay shows, literally, how each of us can carry that message of peace to others.
This fits closely in with the mission of Rotary International – to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through fellowship – and certainly with the aspirations of the Fremont Rotary Club (a.k.a. the Fremont Fun Club). For this reason, the representatives from the World Harmony Run chose to honor Rotarian Suzie Burke with their coveted Torchbearer’s Award at a Fremont Rotary weekly meeting. They described her as ‘an icon’, and explained that she was chosen for her work promoting and supporting the Fremont community.
This meeting also marked the final one of a Rotary year, and the final meeting for 2009-2010 Fremont Rotary President Jean Withers. During her standard one-year term, Withers introduced several innovations including hiring a nanny to help supervise the children welcome to attend the Rotary meetings with their parents.
