Our local State Farm^® Agent, Jeff Kalvelage, wants to remind everyone about the State Farm Neighborhood Assist^® Grant Program, and some exciting updates to this support resource.  As State Farm celebrates its 100^th Anniversary in 2022, they want to offer more grants to spread more good to more communities. This year, there will be 100 grants of $25,000 awarded to non-profit organizations aimed at funding neighborhood improvement projects.  Additionally, State Farm has doubled the number of submissions it will take in – so the application deadline stays open from February 16^th to whenever they receive 4,000 applications. “State Farm Neighborhood Assist truly embodies the spirit of what our company has been about for 100 years – being a good neighbor,” said Rasheed Merritt, Assistant Vice-President at State Farm.  “We are excited about expanding the program in 2022, to help even more neighborhoods.” Individuals or organizations can submit an application on the State Farm Neighborhood Assist webpage (click here,) starting at 10a on February 16^th.  Visit the page now (click here,) to download the submission guide – or stop by the office of State Farm Agent Jeff Kalvelage at the corner of N 36^th & Phinney Ave N for more information. Once all submissions are accepted, up to 4,000, a State Farm Review Committee will narrow the applications down to the Top 200 finalists – and the public will be invited to vote on the final winners from April 27^th – May 6^th.  The final winners will be announced June 7^th. Since State Farm began the Neighborhood Assist Grant Program more than 380 causes have received a total of $10 million, to enact change in their communities.  “Grant programs that address community needs, like Neighborhood Assist, are more important than ever,” said Jeff Kalvelage.  “This initiative truly embodies the spirit of being a Good Neighbor.”  Learn more on the NeighborhoodAssist.com website.  

In February 2022, Hale’s Palladium is going to be brightened and bewildered once again by the hijinks and hilarity of Frank Olivier’s Twisted Cabaret.  This vaudeville show features the exquisite talents and skill of Frank Olivier, and his cast of characters. From February 10^th – 27^th, Frank Olivier will be performing Friday & Saturday nights at 7:30p, with a matinee on Sundays at 3:30p – and a special Valentine’s Day show also at 7:30p.  With live music by the Fez Four Trio, watch Frank Olivier twist and turn, with assistance from Paul Nathan, through the most ingenious and outrageous comedy show imaginable.  Enjoy magic, juggling, sword swallowing, knife throwing, and dozens of more unique and exhilarating circus skills.

Due to continued snow and ice on roads, garbage collection has been cancelled for Friday, December 31^st, with no plans for a delay to Saturday. According to Seattle Public Utilities, all garbage collection is scheduled to resume next week, beginning on Monday, January 3^rd.  All missed residential customers are permitted to set out double their normal amount of garbage, recycling, and compost on their regular collection day for no additional charge.  This permission extends to recycling collection, even if this was not a customer’s typical week of recycling collection.  All customers are encouraged to put out all their containers by 7a to ensure they are collected.

Due to icy road conditions, Seattle Public Utilities has announced that there will be no residential or commercial garbage, recycling or food/yard waste pick-up in Seattle on Monday, December 27^th.  A majority of the Fremont neighborhood has their pick-up regularly scheduled for Mondays, but will have their trash pick-up on Tuesday (or when the weather improves) this week.  Those with Friday pick-ups will, if there are no further interruptions, have their service moved to Saturday this week. All residential services will be delayed one day this week.  Customers missed this week will be allowed to set out double their amount of garbage, recycling and yard waste at no additional charge – on the regularly scheduled collection day.

In times of snow and ice, the City of Seattle emergency planners urge everyone to not drive unnecessarily.  In preparation for these times, it is important to prepare homes and businesses for cold weather and create emergency supply kits for businesses, homes, and vehicles.  For more on how to prepare for winter weather, visit the Seattle Transportation website (click here,) and Take Winter by Storm (click here.) With heavy hearts, the owners of Vif Wine|Coffee, Lauren Feldman & Shawn Mead, have announced that the store & café will be closing at the end of December 2021.  After eight and a half years, and hundreds of customers (and their kids) coming through, the natural wine shop will be consolidating in its partner business, Petite Soif at 3309A Beacon Ave South. The property, which previously housed drive-up eateries like Herfy’s and Winchell’s, is now slated to be developed into a 5-story mixed-use building of 106 residential units and parking.

Vif’s owners knew it could happen, no matter how charming they found the existing building, the property’s owner could choose to develop it.  Vif’s owners have also seen the COVID pandemic, and the restrictions it required, take its toll on their business. Please come by and say farewell to this wonderful shop and café – and to the staff and owners – before it closes at the end of the month.  If you don’t make it, or even if you do, make sure you stop by the other store, Petite Soif, in the new year!  

This Saturday, December 11^th, the Fremont Holiday Shopping Season gets an extra boost!  The small, artisanal and creative boutiques and shops of the Center of the Universe are always great for providing gift items unusual and individual – while you support local entrepreneurs and employees. On December 11^th, find these amazing opportunities augmented by two supremely unique shopping bazaars. Under the Fremont Bridge, the Fremont Sunday Market will bring out the Troll-stice Holiday Market from Noon to 5p.  With over 65 makers, vintage vendors and product purveyors, you will find items for everyone on your shopping list, or you are just not trying!  This new Winter Market is a trial run for what could become a weekly walk under the historic structure starting January 2, 2022.  Even if you don’t really want to shop, stop by to enjoy the DJ, food trucks and colorful Market atmosphere.

In the garden, beside and behind The Uncommon Cottage from Noon to 7p, check out the Dark Delights Gothic Holiday Bazaar – an entirely unconventional outing, and a fundraiser for Gothic Pride Seattle.  For a modest $1 donation, stroll the garden (under tents and umbrellas, in the case of rain) and among the dozens of vendors selling devilish doo-dads, beautiful baubles and goth-y garments.  Find tantalizing treats as well as the weird and whimsical wonders always available at the Uncommon Cottage.  Due to the potential for difficulty keeping an adequate 6-ft distance, all attendees at Dark Delights are asked to wear a face mask – and keep a wary eye out for The Krampus. Fremont always provides a great place for shopping, or bringing the family or friends to explore and entertain during the Holiday Season.  This Saturday, December 11^th, will be an ideal day for a stroll through the Center of the Universe, a look at the lights on Lenin, and see the fantastical and festive offerings!  

The Fremont Arts Council is on a prolonged hiatus, as are so many non-profit organizations during COVID, but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t using the time to improve this all-volunteer, and unique performance art institution.  The FAC has use of the old boiler room, called The Powerhouse, beneath B.F. Day School – and they are cleaning out the old building, painting and generally getting it ready for the next opportunity we all have to build back an even better Solstice Parade! Unfortunately, the area where they’ve stored the art materials from the Powerhouse – near Stone Way, under the Stoneway Café, between N 35^th & N 36^th Streets – is being cleared out for a new, probably paying tenant.  So, the storage moves again – and hands are needed to get the supplies and art shifted. Can you help?

• Volunteers (vaccinated and observing all COVID-19 prevention protocols) are needed on Friday, December 10^th from Noon to 2p to move the art from the storage area to the Powerhouse – and to hang it up.
• Volunteers (again, observing all precautions) are also needed on Saturday, December 11^th from Noon – 4p to move the stored art supplies back to the Powerhouse, along with the office supplies

Volunteers on Friday will be provided with snacks, but Saturday volunteers get pizza!  Everyone is asked to RSVP, so enough snacks and pizza can be procured.  RSVP to fac@fremontartscouncil.org Due to water intrusion, and other work going on, none of the stored items can be unpacked or accessed right now.  Painting of the building is also waiting until the space gets dried out.  Volunteers, and monetary donations, are being sought to help with all the work and the materials needed to get the Powerhouse back to a space functional for staging the amazing productions and performances of the FAC. Come help move the storage, and find out more about the FAC and all its works!  

On Saturday, December 4^th at 5p, the Fremont Festivus & Lenin Lighting returns as a community event celebrating the season, shopping and the special Center of the Universe. Hosted by Improv Comedian Joe Koenen, the Fremont Festivas is now being organized by the amazing folks of the Fremont Chamber of Commerce and Fremont Sunday Market.  The first 20 people at the Lenin Lighting will receive Sunday Market swag. Following the lighting, at 5:30p, in the parking garage under Dreamland Diner, VAM Studios Suitcase Dance Theatre will perform an all-ages show.  Come see their 7-minute Nutcracker Performance, and join in this lively demonstration recital. Last year, COVID-precautions limited the Lenin Lighting to a video performance and recording by Seatown Sound.  Bringing back this annual humorous community celebration required a whole new team to oversee the production.  Fremont is back, and the Chamber and the Market want to see that our whole community can celebrate the Holiday Shopping Season is the artistic style the Center of the Universe expects! This Friday, December 3^rd, from 6p – 9p, the Fremont First Friday Art Walk will welcome art lovers and those who just want a night out, exploring the culture and community at the Center of the Universe.  There are a few places to visit, including Esters Enoteca, Sfingiday, and the Saturn Building. Best of all, the Portage Bay Goods Holiday Party & Art Walk is back!!  After a two-year hiatus, Portage Bay will help shoppers kick-off the Christmas Shopping Season with a glee-filled evening of goods and gift items.  The featured artist, Mollie Thompson, has created an amazing line of greeting cards and will now be showing her art works.  Portage Bay Goods will also be handing out their goodie bags to the first 50 or so people who arrive at the start of the evening, and will have snacks and drinks for those who stay and enjoy the creative products by Thompson and PBG’s other contributing artists. On Saturday, Dec 3^rd, El Dusty will be performing live at Nectar Lounge, with The Cumbieros performing a 10^th Anniversary Show.  Tickets cost only $13, in advance, for this 21+ only show at Fremont’s liveliest nightclub. A Latin-Grammy nominated composer, arranger and producer, El Dusty is considered by some to be the inventor of Cumbia Electronica.  He has been feeding cumbia into his sound processor and synthesizer before the turn of the millennium, translating the Southern Texas border experience into new anthems. Currently on tour, El Dusty has been delivering high-energy dance floor beats.  Accompanied by The Homies, and an assortment of surprise performers from percussionists to vocalists, El Dusty’s live shows are not to be missed. The Fremont Chamber of Commerce Annual Membership Holiday Party will take place on Wednesday, December 8^th from 5p to 8p at The Ballroom at Talarico’s. This is the celebration of Fremont, and all our commercial district has seen and done over the last, well, um, rather eventful year!!  The Fremont Chamber members will vote, on the Board of Directors and an addition to the Chamber By-Laws creating a Code of Ethics.  This business, like most of the Fremont Chamber, won’t take long – or interfere in the fun that the Chamber can create! The rest of the Holiday Party will be given over to a directive to eat, drink and be merry!  The Chamber wants to thank its members for making Fremont the funkiest, friendliest and most fabulous Chamber around – and to kick-off a new year of building and strengthening the business district at the Center of the Universe. The Bastyr Center for Natural Health, on Stone Way, offers plenty of ways to be pro-active and preventative in regards to physical and emotional health.  On Wednesday, December 1^st, from 6:30p – 7:30p, Bastyr will offer a Virtual Living Naturally talk on Holiday Depression Prevention, with Dr. Jennifer Pfeuffer. The Seattle Department of Parks & Recreation announced recently that they have awarded a construction contract to L.W. Sundstrom for renovation work on the B.F. Day Playground.  Construction on the playground, located north of the elementary school, is slated to begin immediately, with the play area open once again by summer of 2022. The renovation project will replace play equipment and improve an adjacent picnic area.  The new play equipment configuration reflects a theme of ‘nature play’ and will include new slides, swings and balancing equipment.

The renovations also include replacing the public drinking fountain and making the playground more accessible in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and national safety standards. Funding for this renovation of the B.F. The Walking Guide to Fremont has been a popular tourist and visitor resource for over three decades.  Begun by Jon Hegeman (the creative mind behind the Sunday Market,) over two decades ago, the Walking Guide remains a colorful, attractive hand-out that now provides information on 100+ small businesses at the Center of the Universe. Last updated in 2019, the Fremont Chamber of Commerce is gathering listings from area businesses that want to let everyone who comes to Fremont know who and where they are in 2022.  The Walking Guide to Fremont is getting yet another make-over this year – and should be an even more powerful tool for Fremont newbies to use to find our amazing and unique stores, shops and sites.

A listing in the Walking Guide will cost $220 for non-Fremont Chamber members – and free to all interested Chamber members.  For those who want to list in the Walking Guide and join the Fremont Chamber, there is still time to sign-up for both! The Fremont Chamber advocates on behalf of the business community of Fremont, as well as promoting and strengthening the commercial district of the Center of the Universe.  The Fremont Chamber serves us better when more of our businesses join together and contribute their voices to this non-profit organization. On December 5^th, from Noon to 3p, Mike Hale of Hale’s Ales Brewery will be hanging up the Brew Boots – and our community will celebrate his retirement and his legacy in beer and Fremont! Since 1983, Mike Hale has been creating craft beer – and encouraging other small batch brewers.  Hale has been known for his dedication to quality and consistency in his brews, and this has led to his brewery being one of the longest-running, independently-owned in the Northwest. Last week, HomeStreet Bank invested in public safety with a major grant to the Seattle Police Foundation, which funds specific programs, equipment and supplemental training requested directly by officers.  HomeStreet Bank will match up to $150,000 in donations made to SPF. “HomeStreet Bank believes public safety is the foundation of healthy communities and that public safety requires an effective police force with strong relationships in the community,” said Mark Mason, President and CEO of HomeStreet.  “We stand with the men and women of the Seattle Police Department.  We appreciate your commitment to our safety, and we care about your job experience, your health and safety, and the impact of your job on your families.”

The Police Foundation supports SPD officers, with wellness and morale programs.  In the past, officers had identified needs for things like teddy bears for children traumatized by domestic violence, education programs for children of incarcerated mothers, beds for children without, gaining the K9 ‘officers’, etc.  Seattle Police Foundation provides donated funds to aid officers in providing the public with safety and prevention programs.  The mission of the SPF is to promote public safety by supporting the professional development of Seattle Police Department employees, and creating community partnerships that encourage citizen participation in the safety of Seattle. “We are so grateful to HomeStreet Bank for this generous gift that shows officers they have support,” shared Cherie Skager, CEO of the Seattle Police Foundation, “It will be a tremendous boost to officer wellness programming that helps SPD officers bring their best to their difficult jobs each day.” Through a year of increased violence and trauma, Seattle communities are struggling.  According to the SPD, there have already been 100 more shootings in 2021 than in 2020.  This gift will help officers working out in our community to better serve our neighbors, and better attend to their own mental and emotional health. On Saturday, November 20^th starting at 9:30a, the Friends of the Troll’s Knoll will host a Community Meeting to discuss plans for the Troll’s Knoll property on the east side of the Fremont Troll statue.  The meeting will take place in the Fremont Arts Council’s Powerhouse, under B.F. Day School, at 3940 Fremont Ave N. Under a Parks Grant, the City of Seattle developed the western Troll’s Knoll but the East Side remains a wild, free and unplanned area.  The meeting will begin with a coffee and conversation time, at 9:30a, and the meeting beginning at 10a.  To maintain safe social distancing, only 20 people will be allowed to attend this meeting – and proof of vaccination, face masks and identification will be required for attendees. After the meeting, a work party to clean-up the area around the Fremont Troll, will take place from 11:30a – 12:30p.  Please RSVP if you can attend either event, or both, at FremontTrollsKnoll@gmail.com

Usually, November 15^th is the day that Fremocentrist.com invites our readers to start voting for the Best Of Fremont.  This year, however, we will be too busy closing down our Headquarters – and we instead invite our readers, and all art fans, to stop by the Down Under Gallery and say farewell! On Sunday, November 28^th, from Noon to 6p, the Down Under Gallery will be open for its final day of business.  The Gallery is closing, after three years, and we hope you will stop by and give the art, and the artists, one more look.

Currently, the Down Under has two young, talented artists featured.  Filip Tuhy has his second show Down Under – this one called ‘Grains Of Sand’.  Tuhy has taken photos of buildings in Seattle and San Francisco and manipulated them, to create a symmetry and composition both pleasing and mind-bending.  The results are reminiscent of M.C. Escher or the twistings of urban landscapes in the film ‘Inception.’ Tuhy has also brought to the Down Under an artist called Urban Mountain Sheep.  She has drawings on-display, both from her bubbly and charming series ‘Homesteading Squirrels’ and pieces of Modern Yokai.  Sheep has also brought us acrylic and watercolor paintings that provide bright and accurate interpretations of landscapes locally and from the southwest.

The Down Under also has pieces by local artists Scott Lantz, Rodman Miller and our curator, Adrian Laney.  November 26^th – 28^th will be the last time we will be able to show these works together, and we hope you will come by and enjoy them with us.  We are very excited about the new business coming to Fremont, with the exit of the Down Under Gallery, and we can fill you in at our ‘Day Of Farewell’ event. Every Sunday through winter, from 5p – 6p, Emmanuel Bible Church will be distributing free boxed meals to those who need one – and offering access to the open clothing & supplies closet.  All are welcome to Sunday Night Dinner & Supply Closet! Pre-pandemic, Emmanuel partnered with Union Gospel Mission (UGM) each winter, to open a seasonal Men’s shelter.  As UGM seeks staff members to schedule at these temporary shelters, Emmanuel wants to still be able to reach out and aid those who need help during the darker, colder days of the year. Each Sunday night volunteers at Emmanuel will serve a hot dinner in front of the Emmanuel Church building on N 50^th St, and invite diners to ‘shop’ for free warm clothing, toiletries, and basic living supplies.  They need at least five volunteers to make the program happen – and donations of new socks, waterproof jackets, and hooded sweatshirts. On November 19^th & 20^th, Fremont-based PRICEarts will produce a new work, by the Never-Ending Works (NEW) Dance Company, at the Erickson Theatre Off-Broadway.  This audacious new piece, called ‘Headline’, is part of the efforts by the NEW Dance Company to reflect the raw truth of challenges faced in our communities. This work was generated by Season 5 Company members, and the composition is curated by Tessa Banales and Noelle Price.  ‘Headline’ explores the juxtaposition between the health and stress of media, both conventional and social.  Its progression, accessibility, and saturation are not definitively harmful, however, they have shortcomings in accuracy and perspective.  Experience ‘Headline’ as an exploration of what we invite into our consciousness.  Allow PRICEarts NEW to encourage an honest assessment of our contributions to media culture, and to acknowledge a universal need for rest. On Friday, November 26^th, High Dive is hosting an Indigenous Heritage Day Celebration, featuring Khu.Éex’.  Get tickets NOW to attend this rare cultural event, produced by Solid Sound and glass artist Preston Singletary. The concert and celebration will also include musical performances by Daisy Chain and Air Jazz.  The featured band, Khu.Éex’, includes storytellers, activists and artists.  Their collective energy arrives on-stage performing as one powerful unit.  The mission of Khu.Éex’ is to raise awareness of the Native American struggle and how the issues faced by Indigenous Peoples can affect all people.  Khu.Éex’ brings an all-too-rare and much-needed Indigenous perspective to their performances, using tribal culture and endangered languages, keeping these alive for the enlightenment and enjoyment of all.

Khu.Éex’ are keepers of cultural knowledge and language, with members of the Tlingit, Haida, and Blackfoot tribes among the band.  Khu.Éex’ began recording in 2013 and has, to date, released a double album, ‘The Wilderness Within’, and two LPs.  All have been produced and released by the band independently.  The band explores Jazz and Funk/Rock, with an improvisational style, fused with spoken word pieces in English, Tlinget, Haida and the Y’upic languages.  Live, Khu.Éex’ perform incorporating art, traditional masks, regalia and create a dynamic show. On Wednesday, November 17^th, at 3:30p, the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board is going to consider whether to grant landmark status to the Hoffner Fisher & Harvey Funeral Home.  The meeting will be held virtually, with participation limited to access by WebEx meeting link or a telephone call-in line. A nomination for landmark status may be submitted by any person or group, and is not necessarily done with permission of the building owner or occupants.  A copy of the landmark nomination information can be found on-line (click here.)  This 96-page document provides history on the property, the families that resideded there, and operated businesses on this site.  According to this document, the nomination was prepared on behalf of the property owners.  Also, according to this document, the property was previously rejected for landmark status.

At the on-line public meeting, on November 17^th, the Landmarks Board may approve the nomination in whole or in part.  Another public meeting would be scheduled, in 30 to 60 days, if the nomination is approved.  This second meeting would designate the building a landmark.  If the Board does not approve the nomination, the proceedings will terminate, and the property cannot be re-considered for landmark status for another five years – except at the request of the property owner.

The public is invited to participate in the virtual nomination meeting, and to make comments regarding this submission.  Registration for comments will begin two hours before the meeting start, and speakers will be given 2 minutes to comment.  Members of the public who wish to speak must be recognized by the Chairperson and/or Landmarks Board staff.  Written comments are also accepted, but they must be received by the Landmarks Preservation Board by 3:30p on Tuesday, November 16^th – at erin.doherty@seattle.gov or by mail (click here for the address.) Seattle University is once again administering the 7^th Annual City-Wide Public Safety Survey to find out what the people who live and work in Seattle think about their security and the work done to keep our community free of crime and violence. The Seattle Public Safety Survey will be open through November 30^th, and is available in many languages.  The purpose of the survey is to solicit feedback on concerns of people in and about Seattle, annually.

A report from the survey results will be provided to the Seattle Police Department (SPD), and can help them understand safety and security priorities in different regions of the city.  The results can also help the SPD leadership decide where to deploy and dedicate limited resources in these times of severe shortages in law enforcement. If you do expect to leave Fremont this winter, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) urges everyone to plan and prepare for winter travel and winter driving. WSDOT has a web page (click here) for tips and information for correct gear and ways you can get ready.  “Our crews work hard to keep roads clear, but we also need the public’s help to keep traffic moving during winter weather,” said WSDOT Maintenance Operations Manager James Morin.  “Most pass closures are due to preventable spin outs or crashes with vehicles going too fast or not having proper winter equipment.”

Most importantly, WSDOT asks travelers to get the most up-to-date information about road conditions and trip planning.  There are a few options:

• Pre-set your radio to 530 AM and/or 1610 AM for WSDOT traffic information

Of course, for those who use transit, METRO also asks riders to be prepared and ready for winter weather.  METRO has an on-line Winter Snow Guide (click here) to provide information about using transit during winter storms.  This page also has details about the Emergency Snow Network (ESN) and the 66 bus routes and ‘chained’ shuttles METRO will run if winter weather becomes too severe.  The METRO website also has a sign-up for Travel Alerts, to give riders information about snow routes, and activation of the ESN.

Winter weather in our region is relatively mild, compared to what much of the Northern parts of the U.S. experience.  However, when the weather does turn foul and frosty here, with the topography of hills and mountains, it can make travel particularly difficult.  This year, be prepared and plan ahead to avoid dangerous situations – and to get where you want to be.  

On Tuesday, November 16^th, from 6p to 7p, the Rotary Club of Fremont, nicknamed the Fremont Fun Club, will host an Open House presentation on ‘What Is Rotary International?’  This service and networking organization will start socializing at 5:30p, to give everyone a chance to meet the volunteers who belong and put action to their philanthropy. At this Open House, Rotary District #5030 Governor Howard Cohen will speak.  He’ll talk about how Rotary makes a positive difference in the lives of people in our local community, and our world.  He can talk about Rotary’s successful efforts to ‘End Polio Now!’  He can also share information about how easy it can be, through the power and perseverance of Rotarians world-wide, to join this network of volunteers to fight illiteracy, hunger, disease, and need among the impoverished of our world.

The Rotary Club of Fremont makes sandwiches for the homeless, and cleans litter from our Burke-Gilman Trail (while also maintaining the Dino Topiaries.)  They’ve targeted help to our Elementary School, the local Boys & Girls Club, and working with Veterans.  Of course, their name says it all, and they’ve hosted the Rock-Paper-Scissors World Championships, Art Shows, and Soup Nights with live music. On Friday, November 5^th, from 6p – 9p, venues will be open showing art – and providing access to working artists.  This First Friday come explore the Center of the Universe and see original art. The Down Under Gallery will be hosting an Artists’ Reception for Filip Tuhy and UrbanMountainSheep.  These two young artists have been on display Down Under through October but on Nov 5^th, come meet them and talk about their art.  Tuhy is a remarkably talented photographer who displayed incredible images of parkour last year, and has now brought in his ‘Grains of Sand’ series.  These photos of buildings from San Francisco and Seattle were twisted and transformed into symmetrical images that evoke MC Escher with real, familiar structures.  UrbanMountainSheep has brought in her humorous ‘Homesteading Squirrels’ drawings along with acrylic and watercolor landscape paintings.

At Esters Enoteca they will have a photo display by Freddy Romero.  From the moment this photographer picked up a camera, while working on his high school yearbook, he fell in love with the ability to capture the images he desired.  Romero focuses on taking photos of what makes him happy, including mountaineering, hiking, skateboarding, traveling, street, lifestyle, or musicians.  There is no theme here, just real life captured by the photographer behind the lens.

Portage Bay Goods has art on display by Kristine Cooper, of Cooper Art & Abode, a local artist with a craving to create genuinely raw artwork is insatiable.  “Each brushstroke and color carefully selected mimicking the colors and textures that come alive for me,” Cooper wrote for her Artist Statement, “on a walk or at a music show.  Nature, traveling and experiences ignite my imagination.”  Portage Bay shows artists with a practical and product based side, and has a store full of creative and artistic gift items. While the election on now is not a National one, or for a flashy office or initiative, the leaders being voted on will make decisions that will affect daily life in our city – and even our neighborhood. Ballots must be completed and submitted by 8p on Tuesday, November 2^nd. In Seattle, voters will be deciding on a new Mayor, a City Councilperson, and a City Attorney.  Voters also will decide whether or not they want to retain our King County Executive and a City Councilperson.  In nearly every race, there are significant differences between the candidates – and there will be significant differences in the ways these people make decisions for our community. Please, vote by November 2^nd, and help determine the direction you want our leaders to take us, our city, our county and our region.  

On Saturday, November 6^th, City Fruit will mark the end of the harvest (with 30,000+ pounds of fruit collected to date) and raise money for the coming year.  From 11a – 3p at their offices at 4000 Aurora Avenue, drop-by the City Fruit Celebrates event and pick-up pre-ordered cider/beer packages, bid on auction items, collect swag and enjoy free ice cream! On Saturday, November 6^th at 7:30p Harmonia Orchestra & Chorus will perform pieces celebrating Johannes Brahms at the First Free Methodist Church.  With baritone Charles Robert Stephens, Harmonia will present these musical monuments to the human spirit. Formerly known as Orchestra Seattle & Seattle Chamber Singers, Harmonia combines a 70-member orchestra with a 55-voice chorus.  The ensemble has adopted as its theme for this season ‘Renewal’, and for its first performance – Brahms.  The concert will open with the rarely heard ‘Elegy for Brahms’ by Hubert Parry, and will feature Brahms’ poignant ‘A German Requiem.’  According to the conductor, William White, the Requiem is “a work that encompasses so much of our inner experience of loss:  the quiet sadness, the bitter tears – even the undamped rage – but it also captures the intense joys of existence.” Tickets can be purchased, for $25, for the concert at the First Free Methodist Church – and streaming on-line via the Harmonia website.  All in-person attendees need to wear a mask and show proof of vaccination at the outer door (unvaccinated children under 12 may enter with a parent or guardian.)  Subscriptions to the remainder of the Harmonia season are still available, for four more mainstage programs including the annual tradition of Handel’s ‘Messiah’ on December 18^th & 19^th.  Visit the Harmonia website to get your tickets soon!  

Each week, Vif Wine|Coffee offers up a fine, natural wine as an example of the best of their incredible collection.  This week, Vif and its sister store, Petite Soif, are featuring what they jokingly call a ‘Vegan Vampire Wine’ – a 2019 Domaine Guion ‘Cuvee Domaine’ from Bourgueil, France for $21. On Sunday, October 31^st, from 2p – 5p, the annual Trick-or-Treat in Fremont returns to the delight of children, parents and a business district anxious to enjoy the kids in costume and the joy of generosity!  Over 100 Fremont businesses, including the micro-businesses at the Fremont Sunday Market, will be handing out treats, in celebration of Halloween and the clever children who remember to issue the sweet threat ‘Trick-or-Treat’!

An up-to-date list of participating businesses can be found on the official Trick-or-Treat in Fremont webpage.  The Fremont Chamber of Commerce has also created a map for the parents.  Click here to see a map of the majority of the participating businesses.  Businesses are located at the Center of the Universe, in Upper Fremont, along Stone Way N, and along West Fremont. Some businesses are offering deals and discounts as well, such as the Fremont Brewery $1 off coupons for those adults accompanying the children, in costume.  Fremont Health Club is simultaneously hosting, with Adventures 4 All, a Winter Gear drop-off.  The Fremont business district loves the future generation, and wants to give them fond memories of this fun and giving neighborhood.

Everyone is welcome to come down and enjoy.  Trick-or-Treating Fremonsters must be children, in costume, in the company of a parent or guardian – and everyone must be wearing a face mask and observing safe social distances.  Those without children, but who want to see the parade of costumed cherubs, are encouraged to avoid crowding the sidewalks or Sunday Market – by staking out a spot at any one of the wonderful bars and restaurants.  Most Fremont eateries, like Dreamland Diner, Shawn O’Donnell’s, Triangle Spirits, El Camino, and George & Dragon Pub, have an outdoor space ideal for watching the ghosts, ghouls and goblins go by!

On Saturday, October 30^th from Noon – 3p, the Fremont Arts Council is asking for volunteer hands in moving stored boxes from the Phinney Neighborhood Association’s community center to a new location near Stone Way. If you can help, able-bodied volunteers are asked to meet at Noon at the Phinney Neighborhood Center at 6532 Phinney Ave N – at the storage entrance on Dayton Ave N between 65^th & 67^th.  Volunteers can park in the upper or lower parking lots. All volunteers will need to wear proper face masks, and be healthy.  No stairs are at either sites, and hand trucks will be provided.  Family and friends are welcome. Unloading will take place across the street from the former Daly’s Paint store on Stone Way at 36^th St.

After all boxes are relocated, volunteers are invited to the Fremont Arts Council Powerhouse, at 3940 Fremont Ave N, for pizza and an opportunity to see all the progress made to clean up the work space.  Volunteers will be needed, in the new year, to paint the Powerhouse – and for a Moving-Back-In work party. On Friday, October 29^th, at 8p, West of Lenin will live stream, for one-night-only, a Macha Theatre Works production from the 17-Minute Stories series.  These solo shows center on the theme of ‘Fierce and (Re)Focused’, and explore the complexities of human existence.  On October 29^th, Macha Theatre will present ‘My Three Closets (Or Surviving The Avalance)’ written and performed by Valerie Curtis-Newton. Directed by Sheila Daniels, this personal narrative is intended to further our understanding of each other, ourselves, and the society we create.  Curtis-Newton will share the story of her queer-Christian journey toward authenticity.  Her 17-minute story will stream live and is considered appropriate for audiences 14years old and older. On October 25^th, at Noon, the Moisture Festival Auction will go on-line to allow for bids for some of the fun items available – to raise money for a 2022 Comedy/Varieté Festival.  The Annual Fall Fundraiser is an On-Line Silent Auction, and a live-stream variety show broadcast from Hale’s Palladium on Sunday, November 7^th starting at 7p. On-Line donors can bid on auction items starting on October 25^th, getting opportunities including a four-hour cruise, for 12, on a private yacht, a Moisture Festival VIP pass, a U-Park parking permit for Fremont, and a country AirBnB stay.  Donors will have more than a week to look at and bid on items donated for the benefit of the incredible display and community that Moisture Festival provides. On October 30^th & 31^st, from 9:30a – 3p, our animal neighbors at Woodland Park Zoo will celebrate Halloween and autumn fun with the Pumpkin Bash, sponsored by T-Mobile.  It’s a great weekend to go see the critters as they enjoy a feast of pumpkins and pumpkin related treats – and children in costume can also trick-or-treat while at the Zoo! Over the weekend of Halloween, one child, in costume, can get free admission to the Woodland Park Zoo, when accompanied by an admission paying adult.  While at the Zoo, the children will be given some treats – and get to watch hippopotami, otters, bears, penguins, meerkats, and others gobble, smash and play with pumpkins.

The Wallingford Community Senior Center offers elders living alone and/or of low-income to access programs and activities that make their lives easier.  During the COVID-19 pandemic, the WCSC has had to close its facility but the staff have still been hard at work, staying in touch with seniors in need and finding creative ways to serve these at risk members of our community.  With vaccines available, the Senior Center has re-opened, increasing the need for cleaning and staff working extra hard to serve – while keeping everyone safe. World Polio Day is October 24^th, and Rotary International wants to recognize the incredible work of volunteers worldwide in vaccinating against this terrible, and often fatal, illness.  Thanks to the work of volunteers, as well as donors, Rotary is close to ending polio. On Tuesday, October 19^th, from 5:30p – 7p, the Rotary Club of Fremont will host an important guest speaker at Hale’s Ales Brewery.  Come hear Ezra Teshome speak on the vital work being done, world-wide, to get everyone vaccinated against polio – and to eradicate this debilitating and sometimes deadly disease.  Teshome has been doing work in Ethiopia, vaccinating people personally.  A Rotary District Past President, Teshome is working directly on the Rotary Polio Plus program, to get everyone protected against polio – and only three countries remain to get their populations fully inoculated. The Fremont Arts Council (FAC) has had to keep its workshop space, The Powerhouse, located beneath B.F. Day Elementary School, closed during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Yet, FAC members have been working this summer on renovating the space to make it better, cleaner and safer for everyone – and the day they can re-open to build one of their incredible celebration art events! For 30 years, The Powerhouse has provided a place for community and guerilla art.  They’ve hosted workshops, classes and meetings in the space, as well as storing materials for May Day, Luminata and, of course, the Fremont Solstice Parade.  The building, originally the Boiler Room for the elementary school, has been a center for inspiration and creation by FAC members, and will hopefully return to providing this outlet in the post-COVID future!

In the meantime, volunteers have been tossing out old carpet, scrapping off years of flakey paint, and removing dust and dirt accumulated over three decades… or more. On Saturday, October 2^nd, and Sunday, October 3^rd, from Noon to 4p, more volunteers are needed to help clean the floors and dust off shelving.  They will also be moving tables and shelves around.  N-95 face masks and disposable nitrile gloves will be available for volunteer use.  Anyone who can help, safely, and is fully vaccinated, is asked to contact fac@fremontartscouncil.org with a ‘YES’. On Wednesday, September 15^th, from 4:30p – 6p, a Meet-The-Candidates Happy Hour gathering will take place out-of-doors at the Pacific Fisherman Shipyard in Ballard, with the Fremont Chamber of Commerce encouraging everyone to come and meet some of tomorrow’s potential leaders.  A meeting fee is being charged on $30 per person. In November, Seattle-area voters have important decisions to make as they vote for a new Seattle Mayor, two at-large Seattle City Councilmembers, Seattle City Attorney and Port of Seattle Commissioners.  Over the last two years, the need for quality, capable leaders has become even more apparent, and Seattle voters need to consider these opportunities carefully.

Local non-profit City Fruit has harvested viable fruit from local trees, and they’ve so far collected 15,000 pounds – and are on track to reach their goal of 40,000 pounds this year. With help from Americorps, Seattle Youth Employment and UW Interns through July and August, City Fruit have collected good fruit from trees at area homes, farms and public areas.  City Fruit prioritizes fruit our community enjoys and can eat without processing.  They’ve collected figs, cherries, apples, plums, and pears – and 150 pounds of blueberries from Canter-berry Farms.  They collect fruit that would otherwise go to waste, sending the best fruit to food banks and at one of their pop-up Fruit-For-All Farmstands. Other fruit not eligible for direct eating, goes to partner organizations such as FareStart, which makes applesauce.  Apples also go to local cideries, plums to area bakeries, and crabapples to make crabapple jelly.  They continue to find sustainable ways to make the fullest use of these resources, to feed people rather than filling waste bins. Anyone interested in learning more can visit the City Fruit office at 4000 Aurora Ave N, Suite 123.  They can distribute some fruit there, to community members, and give advice on tree care services.  The offices are staffed from 9a – 3p, Monday to Friday, although to avoid COVID contamination, visitors are requested to call ahead to 206/922-3967. During a visit, or right now, learn about a City Fruit membership.  Members contribute what they can on a monthly basis, and support the funding of this non-profit.  In exchange, members get discounts to area cideries and nurseries, reduced costs on tree care services, and enrollment in the City Fruit Master Tree Stewards program.  For a limited time, new members can also get a home-made plum torte – made from fruit harvested from area trees. After careful consideration and a great many discussions, the Book Larder staff will be bringing back their popular cooking classes, slowly, and with plenty of plans for safe and transmission-less sessions. With class sign-ups available for September, it is good to get to know the parameters for participants.  A proof of vaccination, and identify, will be required for all students – and there will be no records kept so proof will be required for every session for every student.  All students will need to wear face masks at all times, except when eating, even if vaccinated.  To-go containers will be provided for students who would prefer to keep their mask on, and take the meal with them.  Extra seating will be provided so that students can maintain safe social distances during classes.

All classes will be held outside of regular store hours, which means that lunch break classes will be kept on-hold until they can be returned safely.  Book Larder wants to provide as safe an environment as possible for those ready to engage in more learning. Upcoming classes include:

A great way to start off the Labor Day weekend is with a short stroll through Fremont, to enjoy the art and celebrate the last days of summer.  The Fremont First Friday Art Walk is taking a break to keep everyone safe from transmission of the Delta Variant of COVID-19, but two sites have art available to show following State guidelines. The marginalized members of the Fremont community have access to three different food banks, if they need to supplement the food for themselves or their families.  In addition to the Ballard Food Bank, FamilyWorks operates two food banks for those in need – in Wallingford and the Greenwood Food Bank, partnered with the Salvation Army Seattle Temple Corps. Earlier this year, Salvation Army gave the Greenwood site a full renovation of the food bank space.  They transformed a large multi-purpose room into a more organized and efficient service space, with storage areas and food bank service.  They added bulk refrigeration, with glass doors to display the protein, dairy and produce options.

This improvement further expands the ability of the Greenwood Food Bank to serve the North Seattle community, as it has since 2016.  FamilyWorks thanks the Salvation Army for making these changes to this space – and looks forward to continuing supplying food and technical support to this amazing team! The Fremont Sunday Market has operated nearly year-round for over 30 years, and even in this COVID-19 time, vendors and visitors look forward to continuing this open-air market into the Fall. As of August 23rd, the Seattle/King County Public Health updated its Face Mask Mandate.  The Sunday Market organizers, Northwest Marketplaces, want everyone to know that masks are now required to be worn by all vendors and visitors over 2 years old, when stepping inside the garage and Hyper Market.  This applies to everyone, regardless of vaccine status.  Also, face masks are recommended in crowded outdoor settings, where it will be difficult to maintain a significant physical distance between non-household members.

The Transportation Choices Coalition will be hosting a Transit Talk on what Free Transit could mean for our community, and the obstacles to making this decision.  The Transit Talk will be held on September 1^st at 3p, on Zoom, and is free to ‘attend.’ The Transportation Choices Coalition sees accessible, equitable transit as a part of a just recovery, and transit for all riders as a priority for the health of our community and our planet.  The Sep 1^st Transit Talk will consider what role fare charges play beyond revenue, and the unseen costs of fare collection.  Stable revenue streams are required to maintain transit agencies, but can this be found without burdening riders?  And how do we encourage more riders while prioritizing equity. This panel discussion will feature Isaac Joy, President of King County Equity Now; Katie Wilson, General Secretary of the Transit Riders Union and other experts in this field.  The Transit Talk will be moderated by Hester Serebrin, Director of Policy & Programs for Transportation Choices Coalition. This Saturday, August 28^th from 9a – Noon, there will be a Community Clean-Up on the Eastside of the Troll’s Knoll, at the Fremont Troll statue site. On Monday, August 23^rd, from 7p – 8:30p, the Fremont Neighborhood Council (FNC) will be meeting to discuss neighborhood issues, and all Fremont residents are welcome to participate.  The FNC meetings are currently held on-line making it easier for everyone to be a part of this advocacy organization. At the August meeting of the FNC, a presentation will be made by Lee Brunch and Bryant Mason on behalf of the Aurora Reimagined Coalition.  This group of community organizations is brainstorming ideas about the George Washington Memorial Bridge, and the entire Highway 99 corridor.  They are attempting to make the Aurora Corridor better. The FNC will also follow-up on actions taken by the Duwamish Tribe for recognition.  They will also discuss the transition of the FNC to hybrid meetings, in person as well as on-line.  Some other items up for discussion are:

Hale’s Ales Brewery has expanded the hours of its Taproom.  Starting last week, Hale’s Taproom will be open Mondays – Wednesdays from 3p – 8p, and Thursdays – Sundays from Noon – 8p.  The Taproom now has outdoor and indoor seating (with air-conditioning!) One of Fremont’s most prodigious public art creators, and our community’s liaison between the Fremont Arts Council and the Fremont Chamber of Commerce, has passed away.  Rodman Gilder Miller, a popular glass artist and instructor, died August 10^th surrounded by family and friends, after a long battle with cancer. Leaving behind a vast legacy of art, including several public pieces around his hometown of Fremont, Rodman Miller also made great music with a large community of friends.

He’s danced in the Solstice Parade, played bells at significant neighborhood events, hosted performers for the Moisture Festival, and joyfully played Fremont’s Santa for the past decade. In the last few years Rodman Miller had to focus on his health fight and was forced to cut back on his volunteering and glass art, yet his dedication to our community remained strong.  Fremont saw him as recently as the Summer Solstice Art Week and the June Fremont Fringe and Art Walk, before his illness required him to stay home, where he welcomed friends and family for visits, chats, and music.

While our community will feel the loss of Rodman deeply, as a friend, supporter and art contributor, his widow, Susan Miller, and the rest of his family are desperately trying to find their way without him.  A memorial will be held, so we can gather and remember this incredible individual, and it will be announced as soon as plans are finalized. Rest in Peace, Rodman!

Right now, two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have begun drilling beneath Ballard and in Fremont, as part of the Ship Canal Water Quality Project. In Ballard, an 18-foot TBM, named MudHoney, began drilling what will be a 2.7-mile elongated storage tank beneath Fremont and ending at Interlake Avenue.  Another TBM has begun drilling an 8-foot conveyance tunnel from Fremont to Queen Anne, and is expected to take three months to complete its work.  The tunnel from Queen Anne will connect with the elongated storage tank, to capture storm water during heavy rains and keep polluted water from entering the Ship Canal, Lake Union and other public waterways. The Ship Canal Water Quality Project is causing upheaval around our area, but it is also providing art opportunities.  In partnership with the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture, the Project Managers are organizing artworks both temporary and permanent.

For one installation, called Oceans of Emotion, created by Lisa Liedgren Alexandersson and Kait Rhoads, the public are invited to contribute a piece.  The installation is intended to reference and respond to the pandemic and turbulent political times, and on Sunday, August 15^th, the public can come and write or draw on a small disk what they want to release from the past year, and embrace for the future.  At an outdoor, in-person gathering from 10a – 5p, at Interlake Ave N & N 35^th St, come contribute to this public art installation.  The finished piece will be on-display at this site from now until February 2022. There are two events coming up combining beer and fundraising, that both promise fun alongside supporting a terrific cause! On Friday, August 6^th, the art will be literally lining the streets of Fremont.  This month we are being treated to both the Fremont First Friday Art Walk and the Fremont Fringe, going on all around the Center of the Universe. The Fremont Art Walk features businesses around the neighborhood, showing art.  The First Friday Art Walk continues to grow, as more of our brick-and-mortar shops open and have artists in to display.  For August, Fremont Mischief Distillery will be showing off its extensive in-house collection, but also stop by and see pieces for purchase at:

• Esters Enoteca – Right now, vintage, LED lighted shadow boxes are on-display. Created by Gary Polinsky, these boxes frame mirrored glass sandblasted with traditional Native American imagery.  Polinsky carved the images by thinking ‘backwards’ about the shapes and taking up to seven layers of glass off in places, using an Xacto knife and his fingers.  The shadowboxes are for sale with proceeds going to support the work of the Fremont Arts Council.

• Down Under Gallery – First Friday will be the official opening of the latest show by Gallery favorite Sarah Weathers of Vibrant Poppy. Startling colors burst forth from the dark canvas as the floral photos that Weathers has taken around South Lake Union and Fremont are presented in her new show, ‘Out of Darkness.’  A self-taught photographer, this artist also creates with yarn and needles – a collection of hand-crafted are also presented amidst the photos of Vibrant Poppy.

 

• Portage Bay Goods – Works by Kristian Winnie are on-display at the Procrastinator’s gift shop, and on-line (click here.) The vibrant, underwater world of this multi-skilled artist can be explored through his paintings.  Kristian’s technique is a casserole of life’s events and lessons learned, which he paints as he lives, in full color.

Fremont Mischief Distillery and the Mischief On Canal café will also be open during Art Walk, showing off the extensive collection of art they have collected.  The Fremont First Friday Art Walk is free, and open to families and friends who want to explore the art of these venues. In their continuing quest to keep staff and customers safe, a few Fremont businesses have chosen to require customers to provide proof of vaccine for entry.  Most of these requirements will take effect on Monday, August 2^nd – so it is important that you have your card either on you or on your phone. At Talarico’s, starting July 30^th, “vaccination is required for entry at Talarico’s Fremont/Ballroom.  This decision is not intended to exclude, it is intended to ensure the safety of our staff and guests,” according to a post on the Talarico’s Fremont Facebook page (click here.)

Both Nectar Lounge and High Dive have announced that to attend a show, starting on August 2^nd, at the door everyone will need to present official government photo identification (after all, these are 21+ establishments,) and a vaccine card (or photo), proof of vaccination in an approved app, or a negative COVID-19 test done within 48 hours of arrival and administered at an approved Seattle & King County Public Health location (click here.)  Find out more on the Nectar website, or the High Dive site (click here.) At The Barrel Thief, “starting Tuesday, August 3^rd, customers will need to provide proof of vaccination,” according to the website (click here.)  “In the interest of customer & staff well-being,” the website said, “This policy will be in effect until we deem the local Covid numbers to have sufficiently improved.”

Red Star Taco Bar will also require proof of vaccination, as of August 2^nd, by all guests.  “Breakthrough cases are on the rise and the health and safety of our staff and community remain our top priority,” according to the Red Star Facebook page (click here,) “Please be kind to the staff who are enforcing the rules, and thank you for your understanding.”  This rule will be enforced at both the Fremont and Tacoma locations. If you want to enter these businesses, you will need to provide the proof they require.  Please be prepared, and keep yourself and others safe – and respect the needs of others to do the same.  

For the year of 2021, with so many Seattle cultural centers closed due to COVID-19 transmission precautions, the Woodland Park Zoo has been sending its residents off to visit these sites and showcase their community benefits, and how they are ‘Wild At Heart’.

For July, the animals from the Zoo were allowed in to The 5^th Avenue Theatre.  As the metaphorical curtain began to lift in July, and the State of Washington re-open our cultural centers, Woodland Park featured the theatre built originally in 1926 as a Vaudeville palace. A 16-year-old red-footed Tortoise, named Bolivar, and his brother Rivera, took to the stage at The 5^th Avenue.  These species ambassadors frolicked, on behalf of all the turtles and tortoises, and you can show your support of their friends as a digital Zoo Parent – find out more on Zoo.org (click here.)  This program helps fund care of animals at Woodland Park, and supports wildlife conservation programs in the Pacific Northwest. Bolivar and Rivera were joined at The 5^th by Henry, the 7-year-old blue-tongued Skink, who hung out in the spot booth – far above the stage.  While a show-stopping sight, Henry’s calm demeanor made him well-suited to playing in the technical, backstage area.

On Tuesday, August 3^rd, a primary vote will be held, and all registered voters in Seattle/King County should have received a ballot in the mail – and it must be completed and submitted by 8p on August 3^rd. A local community group, called ‘Speak Out Seattle’, has assembled a Voter’s Guide with recommendations for candidates.

“This election gives us real opportunities for change,” according to the S.O.S. press release, and they provide ratings on candidates for Mayor, City Attorney and the two At-Large Seattle City Council seats, up for election this year. As a primary election, by voting with consideration for quality candidates, voters will give everyone the best of choices in the general election on November 2^nd.  In several of the races, the field of candidates is very crowded and the primary will narrow down our choices to two. The Fremont Branch Library remains closed due to COVID restrictions, but is expected to reopen on August 4th.  Late breaking news that came to us thanks to a dedicated staffer of the Branch. Today, July 27^th, Fremocentrist.com wants to take a moment to celebrate the wonderful, historic structure that the Fremont Library occupies – opened on this day 100 years ago. Since 1894, the Fremont community had a Reading Room, with local farmer Erastus Witter campaigning among wealthy residents and business owners for book donations, and other resources.  Witter’s residence was the Reading Room location until 1901 when Sidney S. Elder gave him rooms above his Fremont Drug Co.  The site is still exists, with Jai Thai located in the former drug store. In 1902, the Seattle Library System took over Association operations, and in 1903 the Fremont location became a branch (now the oldest operating branch in the SPL.)  With our continued commitment to our library, local business owners and neighbors became determined to find a permanent, free-standing site for it.  Fundraisers were held, such as rummage sales, card parties, and a circus, to raise money for land and a building.  The local Business Men’s Club also applied to philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, and the Carnegie Foundation for funding. In one of his last bequeaths, Carnegie gave Fremont $35,000 – less than the neighborhood hoped to receive.  Due to the shortness of funds, plans to hire a big name architect were scrapped and the City Architect was pressed into service.  Architect Daniel R. Huntington decided to have fun with the project and took his inspiration from Italian Crafter’s Cottages. The building, completed and opened on July 27^th, 1921, remains one of Fremont’s treasures – a sweet, structurally sound and entirely practical place perfect for our reading room.  The need for air conditioning and an elevator were not known back in the 1920s, but the building otherwise provides a perfect spot for relaxing and reading – or accessing the knowledge and resources that Seattle Public Library staff eagerly supply. The Fremont Branch Library is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is recognized by Seattle’s Landmarks Preservation Board.  The neighborhood misses this vital piece in the ebb and flow of our community – and the staff who often stand as Very Important Persons, and minor celebrities, for their hard work keeping us all informed.
