The Seattle Office of Arts & Culture (ARTS), in partnership with The AMP: AIDS Memorial Pathway, seeks an artist, or an artist team, to create a durable and permanent piece of public art. The piece would be sited in a transit-oriented development on Capitol Hill, at Broadway & John streets, to provide a physical place for remembrance and reflection on the lives lost to HIV/AIDS, and a call to action to end the disease, the stigma and the discrimination against those who suffer.
The site chosen for the AIDS Memorial Pathway is on a tower wall, approximately 40’ high and 30’ wide, at the north-end of the transit plaza. The tower wall will serve as a backdrop to a community space, and flanked by several new multi-story residential buildings under-construction now.
Professional artists, from anywhere, are eligible for this Call For Artists, with applications due by 10:59p on March 19th. ARTS policies call for diversity in the city’s collection so artists’ whose work is already well-represented in the City’s collection are eligible to apply but artistic diversity is one factor in the selection process.
The artist, or arts team, selected will receive a commission of $300,000 USD to design, fabricate and install the completed artwork. This amount covers all travel, taxes, and other expenses. The project contractor will provide in-kind engineering and construction support, to be coordinated under contract.
For more information on how to apply, and what to include in any application, participate in an information session via webinar on Tuesday, February 26th, at 1p. To participate, RSVP with “Add me to the online workshop” to kristen.ramirez@seattle.gov by Feb 22nd.
An application for this Call For Entries to create a permanent art piece for the AIDS Memorial Pathway can be submitted to the ARTS CaFÉ website (click here.)
