The Seattle Office of Arts & Culture (ARTS,) in partnership with Seattle Public Utilities, is seeking emerging artists to develop temporary art works for display on construction walls and fences during work on the Ship Canal Water Quality Project. This temporary exhibition will be called FLOW 2020, and could incorporate works by six to eight artists.
By Friday, July 19th at 10:59p, artists can apply to design and develop art works to be affixed or applied to wood construction walls or chain-link fences. Selected artists will create artwork specifically designed for one of four construction sites. Artists are invited to use a variety of media and materials for these installations, including but not limited to paint, photography, murals, sculptural attachments, collage, relief, rope, ribbon, or plastic puck attachments. The art can explore themes and ideas relevant to the artist, to the site context and/or history, water quality issues, and the presence of drainage and wastewater facilities.
This call is specifically designed to encourage and enable emerging artists, who are in the early stages of their career and have not yet completed a commission greater than $20,000. Student, however, are not eligible to apply. ARTS also wants to encourage diversity in its collection, and programming, and will consider artistic diversity as one factor in the selection process.
Each of the selected artists will receive $10,000, inclusive of all fees for design, fabrication and installation, plus taxes. ARTS is also offering free, optional workshops to provide information about FLOW 2020 projects, and the application process. Workshops are being held at the ARTS at King Street Station (303 Jackson St, Top Floor) and will take place:
- Thursday, June 27th from 5:30p – 6:30p
- Saturday, June 29th from 11a – Noon
Applications can be made through the Call For Entries website (click here.) Any further information can be requested from Jason Huff of ARTS at jason.huff@seattle.gov or 206-684-7278
