In an effort to remind everyone to compost – rather than dump – unwanted Halloween treats, the Seattle Public Utilities has announced a contest inviting everyone to share their scary tales of horrors faced when confronting the bottom of the Halloween candy stash.
Candy corn, carob confections, chocolate coins, candy necklaces, popcorn balls, caramel apples, raisin bonbons, pecan rolls, marshmallow pumpkins, circus peanuts, salt water taffy, cough drops and confectionary wafers can inspire mouth-watering hunger in some, chills of horror in others.
Don’t ingest horrific treats. Dispose of unwanted candy leftovers. Unwrap ugly, yucky confections, put wrappers and gum in the general waste, and candy in the food and yard waste cart, to convert them into soil that will grow pumpkins, sunflowers and other garden delights.
Last year, Seattle residents diverted 35,000 tons of unwanted leftovers from the landfill by composting them instead.
For those who want to share their tales of terror from facing Halloween candy, e-mail Seattle Public Utilities (at spu_news@seattle.gov) with details about the “least favorite” treat received. Enter by October 26 to qualify to win a kitchen compost collector, with results and winners to be announced October 31.
