Every school year students at B.F. Day Elementary School (many of who come from new immigrant families where English is not spoken at home) need homework assistance, and they can get it from area volunteers.
Each January the After School Tutoring Program can take new volunteers – Can you help?
Orientation meetings will be held on January 3rd & 5th, at the school, from 3p – 4p. Even if you aren’t sure this is the right opportunity for you, attend one of the gatherings and hear about the program. Find out how easy it is to do an incredible amount of good by giving an hour and a half twice a week from January 10th – April 5th.
Tutoring sessions take place after school, from 3p – 4:15p, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Volunteers are matched with children, and those who cannot attend both sessions every week can “share” a child with another volunteer. All materials are provided. Volunteers only need to bring an ability to do basic reading, writing, math and a mentoring attitude.
Organizer Beth Tesh, Volunteer Coordinator at B.F. Day, will help make this a workable and positive experience for all volunteers. Questions can be sent to Tesh by e-mail, at bltesh@seattleschools.org or phone at 206/252-6042.
