Request For Proposals for Solstice Parade McKay Grants

Every FAC Solstice Parade starts with the emblem of the sun, designed by Dave McKay Photo by K. Lindsay, Jun '12

This week the Fremont Arts Council (FAC) sent out a Request for Proposals (RFP,) seeking applications from artists building ensembles or floats for the 24th FAC Solstice Parade, or installations for the Gas Works Park gathering afterwards.  McKay grants of up to $1,000 will be given out from a total pool of $4,500, with the deadline for submissions at 5p on Monday, March 26th.

The 2012 Parade hits the streets of Fremont at Noon on Saturday, June 16th, and the FAC wants wild ideas, insane impossibilities and radical recipes for fun!

The primary goal of the Dave McKay Parade Grant program is to honor the memory of the celebration artist who brought thoughtful intention, craftsmanship and deep attention to detail to parade building.  The grants support artists who bring engaging art to the parade, and enhance its spirit of creative community collaboration.

Grant funds may be used for artists’ fees, materials and supplies, equipment purchase or rental, travel and transportation.  Existing artwork can be re-mounted for parade exhibition.  Grant funds can NOT be used to stage fundraising events; for project expenses that occur prior to or after the project dates; or for operating costs not directly associated with the parade project.

FAC most often funds proposals from artists for the development of parade ensembles.  Proposals for parade-related art installations (for Gas Works park, gateways, etc.,) and other crazy ideas never before dreamed about are also accepted for funding consideration.

Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee composed of FAC members and Solstice Parade Staff.  They will give special consideration to projects:

  1. Created in our public workshops
  2. Done in large-scale, that use the 360 degrees available in street theater
  3. Use of recycled materials
  4. Directly engage audiences along the parade route
  5. Use kinetic movement
  6. Of thought-provoking, innovative ensembles

The application, available on-line, also asks how the project will support the principles of the FAC – found on the website.  Applications must be digitally received, at lesliez@fremontartscouncil.org, by 5p on March 26th to be valid.  Selections, and notification, will be made by April 9th, 2012.
