The development of property near the foot of Stone Way into an office/retail building attaining unprecedented sustainability remains in question as the Seattle City Council decides on proposed changes to the Living Building Pilot Program (LBPP.) On Monday, July 9th, at 5:30p, the Council Land Use, Planning & Sustainability Committee will hear comments from the public on these changes – and be asked to make decisions that will decide if plans for Stone34 can continue.
The proposed changes, as requested by the Seattle Department of Planning & Development, would extend the life of the LBPP beyond the end of 2012 and add flexibility to the project to encourage more sustainable building practice like those planned for Stone34.
The public can make comment on these proposed changes at the hearing on July 9th, if they register just before the hearing begins. Comments will be limited to those relevant to the proposed changes, and the efforts to create more deep green buildings like Stone34.
To date, very few developers have considered building under the strict guidelines of the LBPP, although such buildings would drastically reduce the carbon footprint of the inhabitants. Yet, if accomplished, Stone34 will become a model for new construction around the county – a pioneering accomplishment towards increasing environmental responsibility.
Additional opportunities to speak, and influence, this process will be on:
Wednesday, July 11th at 9a – City Council Land Use Committee meeting
Wednesday, July 25th at 9a – City Council Land Use Committee meeting
Monday, July 30th at 2p – City Full Council Meeting & Vote
To influence the future of Fremont, we must make our voices heard. Even if you choose not to speak, consider attending one (or all) of the upcoming public hearings and showing your support for the process – and the efforts of all those involved.
