The Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, in partnership with Seattle City Light (SCL), seeks an artist or artist team to develop a permanent, site-integrated artwork for SCL’s new Denny Substation. The substation will provide a new electrical power distribution system to serve the South Lake Union and Denny Triangle urban areas. The deadline for applications is Friday, November 2nd, at 11p.
To be eligible, the artist must be a professional residing in the United States, and be able to work closely with SCL and the substation’s design team to develop the artwork. The artist will also develop proposals for opportunities for artworks by other artists that can be incorporated in and around the facility in the future.
The budget to complete the artwork is $300,000, all-inclusive of travel expenses, taxes, and other proposal and project costs. The artist will first receive a design contract for $60,000 to develop artwork and additional art opportunities. If the artwork proposal is accepted, the artist will receive a contract for $240,000 to fabricate and install the artwork.
The artist will join the project team in January 2013. The design phase of the project is in design development, with construction to be complete in late 2016.
