Holiday Waste Collection Dates & Ideas

No solid waste collections will be done Tuesday, December 25th or Tuesday, January 1st, reported Seattle Public Utilities.  Those collections will move back a day to Wednesday – and those with regular collections on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays will have pick-up done one day later.

Those with garbage, food & yard waste, and/or recycling collection on Mondays – specifically scheduled for December 24th & December 31st – should experience no change.  Everyone should have their containers out and available for collection by 7a to ensure service.

Seattle Public Utilities will be telephoning customers this week to alert them of the change.  Also, recycling and disposal stations will be closed on December 25th and January 1st.

Waste Management NW also wants to encourage everyone to ‘Think Green this holiday season!’  Make this season brighter by continuing recycling and composting habits rather than creating trash.  Consider these easy ways to keep trash levels low:

  • Choose to reuse:  use durable dishware for serving, and old maps and/or newspaper to wrap gifts.
  • Give zero-waste gifts: music, sports lessons, gym memberships, tickets to sporting events/concerts, and the always appreciated gift of time!
  • Recycle right:  visit www.wmnorthwest.com to see what is recyclable in this area.

Also, find more tips to reduce holiday waste on the U.S. E.P.A. website.  The holiday season can quickly undo all the great work normally done to reduce-reuse-recycle.  This year, try to find a new enviro-friendly tradition – and give the planet a special gift as well!
