On Tuesday, June 24th, Seattle Public Utilities will host a public open house and hearing on the ‘Plan To Protect Seattle’s Waterways’, a document being developed to outline the steps the City of Seattle will take to address combined sewer system overflows. The hearing will take place at 6p at the Lake Washington Rowing Club.
In some parts of Seattle, storm water combines with sewage in a single pipeline and when a storm brings enough rain, the pipelines overflow into public waterways. Built before the Federal Clean Water Act prohibited these overflows, the City must now – under a consent decree – improve and/or build new methods of keeping these sewage overflows from occurring, by a 2025 deadline.
Those unable to attend the June 24th public hearing may also submit comments by June 30th to Betty Meyer, of Seattle Public Utilities, at betty.meyer@seattle.gov or Seattle Municipal Tower, Suite 4900, PO Box 34018, Seattle, WA 98124-4018.
