On December 2nd, the Fremont Chamber of Commerce presented its annual awards for area heroes improving and strengthening the community here at the Center of the Universe.
Selected by the Board of the Fremont Chamber, these awards are given to outstanding organizations and individuals selected upon their performance over the past year. The four, one-time only, exceptional achievement awards were:
- The ‘Thanks For Hangin’ Around Award’ to the Fremont Sunday Market, for bringing outdoor markets to Seattle, and for being here, as strong as ever, 25 years later!
- The ‘Seventh Inning Stretch Award’ to the Hallows Church, for all their family-orientated events in our community
- The ‘Saving The Day Award’ to The Ballroom, for providing pizza to the Fremont Chamber Ducks & Suds Event, on a moment’s notice
- The ‘Expo Expert Award’ to Cheryl Shepherd, of Shepherd Family Chiropractic, for putting a shine into the Neighborhood Expo and stepping it up!
The Fremont Chamber also has six awards it presents every year, in recognition of specific acts deserving of encouragement and reward. This year, the winners of these six annual awards are:
- The Local Hero Beero Award, for helping Fremont remain fabulous, to:
Matt Linecum and Sara Nelson of Fremont Brewing Company, for bringing beer back to Fremont with more micro, more fun and more community support!
- The Chamber Pot Of Commerce, for brilliant business practices that make us all look good, to:
Mike Dunn, of Dunn Lumber, for standing up to protect his own and neighboring businesses by bringing light, and awareness, to the street camping and crime issue - The Hammering Man, for perseverance on projects that many consider impossible, to:
Adrian Laney, of Fremocentrist.com, for embracing Fremont as home, making established events bigger, brighter and faster (especially Fremont Festivus,) and ‘for keeping Kirby sane.’ (Chamber’s words, not mine – author.) - The Fremont Patches Pal, for bringing more fun to Fremont, or promoting our fun persona to the greater universe, to:
Groundspeak/GeocachingHQ, for the Geocaching Block Party, and creating the largest treasure hunt in the world, then building it here at the Center of the Universe.
- The Bertha K. Landes (The Big Bertha), for taking no flack, taking no prisoners, and taking charge – and getting things done!, to:
Barbara Luecke, current President of the Fremont Arts Council, for herding the cats and being a joy to work with - The Jim Daly, Press On Regardless, for perseverance, specifically in communicating and rallying the community, to:
Margie Freeman, of Fremont Boat Company and Fremont Tugboat, for 100 amazing years of these iconic businesses, and for continuous contributions to building our community, on the land and on the shore
