For an 180-square-foot storefront in the Seattle Municipal Tower, called the Seattle Presents Gallery, the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture is seeking four artists/artist teams to develop and coordinate a social practice/community engaged project. The projects must address homelessness, gentrification and/or displacement, and will culminate in a two-month exhibition between the months of February and September 2017.
The total artwork project budget is $1,500, to cover artist fees, materials, travel expenses, taxes and other associated costs. To be eligible for this commission, artists (and artist teams) must be professionals who reside in Washington state (students are not eligible.) The deadline for applications for this commission is 11p on November 29th.
For this project, artists are asked to think expansively about what shelter and stability mean to diverse people and populations – and to examine the systemic causes of homelessness. An exploratory period, where artists can work with service organizations, homeless populations and/or other artists as they develop a body of work for exhibition, is expected as part of this project.
