The Ship Canal Water Quality Project is building a stormwater collection system beneath Ballard, Fremont & Wallingford – to keep contaminated water out of the Canal and Lake Union. This massive construction project is ramping up, with workers beginning to do visible work in the neighborhood – in Fremont next week.
The Ship Canal Water Quality Project has five major worksites operating, with the one farthest west is in Ballard at the old Yankee Diner site. Right now, that site has a ‘slurry wall’ going up to support the 100 ft deep, 90 ft wide shaft excavation. This will be for the new stormwater storage tank, but also will be the launch point for a tunnel boring machine. Construction of the slurry wall is anticipated to take three months.
Next week, construction is expected to begin at NW 36th St & 2nd Ave NW – along Canal Park – with road closures expected. There will also be on-site trees, asphalt and sidewalk removed (click here for the PowerPoint about tree removal.) Workers will be installing stormwater control and soil monitoring equipment, plus a temporary storm-drain bypass.
