On Saturday, November 6th at 7:30p Harmonia Orchestra & Chorus will perform pieces celebrating Johannes Brahms at the First Free Methodist Church. With baritone Charles Robert Stephens, Harmonia will present these musical monuments to the human spirit.
Formerly known as Orchestra Seattle & Seattle Chamber Singers, Harmonia combines a 70-member orchestra with a 55-voice chorus. The ensemble has adopted as its theme for this season ‘Renewal’, and for its first performance – Brahms. The concert will open with the rarely heard ‘Elegy for Brahms’ by Hubert Parry, and will feature Brahms’ poignant ‘A German Requiem.’ According to the conductor, William White, the Requiem is “a work that encompasses so much of our inner experience of loss: the quiet sadness, the bitter tears – even the undamped rage – but it also captures the intense joys of existence.”
Tickets can be purchased, for $25, for the concert at the First Free Methodist Church – and streaming on-line via the Harmonia website. All in-person attendees need to wear a mask and show proof of vaccination at the outer door (unvaccinated children under 12 may enter with a parent or guardian.) Subscriptions to the remainder of the Harmonia season are still available, for four more mainstage programs including the annual tradition of Handel’s ‘Messiah’ on December 18th & 19th.
