‘An African Celebration!’ At Fremont’s Own Nectar Lounge

NectarJun14AfricanCelebration_1609773_845300235487233_5915715354154239537_nOn Wednesday, June 11th, doors open at 8p as Nectar Lounge and SolidSound host ‘An African Celebration!’ featuring the talents of Thomas Mapfumo & The Blacks Unlimited, Bongo Love, and Thione Diop’s Afrogroove.  This exciting evening of drumming, and dancing will give audiences exposure to new sounds, and an underrepresented culture in Fremont.

Thomas Mapfumo, a Zimbabwean musician, has used his revolutionary, spiritually charged music to decry injustice, and highlight the historical and cultural issues that underlie the news headlines.  A pioneer of the Chimurenga music style, and described as a musical visionary, Mapfumo will share his rich heritage with audiences at Nectar.

Bongo Love, also from Zimbabwe, will join Mapfumo on June 11th with ‘Afrocoustics’ as this band calls its genre.  Musicians immersed and influenced by a global musical perspective play a fusion of guitar and traditional African acoustic instruments, they will perform original songs and vibrant dances that have captivated audiences for over a decade.

Thione Diop, the third featured act of the evening, lives in Seattle but originally came from Senegal, West Africa, and is widely recognized for his powerfully expressive performances on the djembe.  A collaborator and accompanist, Diop has produced local events that celebrate the African culture and had his sound used in movie and documentary soundtracks.
