This Friday, May 4th, from 6p – 9p, will be the Fremont First Friday Art Walk – an always lovely excuse to go for a stroll and seek out the treasures on display in the vast variety of Fremont’s art venues.
Welcome Xavier Lopez Jr. back to Fremont! For May, the Treehouse offices of Brown Paper Tickets (upstairs from LTD Bar + Grill,) are showing paintings by Lopez, an artist that got his start at the former Fremont art gallery The Orange Splot.
Frame-Up Studios will be showing colorful abstract paintings by Amber Thomas. These works will engage, and challenge preconceived notions of what art should be.
At High Dive, see works displayed as part of Splash Of The Caribbean, a unique arts & crafts line made in the islands. This month see papier-mâché carnival masks made by Manuel de Jesus Jimenez of the Dominican Republic, and recycled oil drum sculptures by Zig Zag Atelier D’Arte of Haiti.
As usual, Fremont Jewelry Design impresses with the beautiful, bold and textural mixed-media paintings of Erika Laureano. Come enjoy the works, which also include metal wall hangings and jewelry, as well as checking on the new creations regularly on-display in Fremont’s award-winning jewelry shop.
Expect to see Deviant Décor on display at Portage Bay Goods, particularly works created under that trademark by Krystal Kerr. The Deviant line specializes in framed Victorian miniatures, objects and oddities. These whimsical pieces can best be enjoyed in the entirely oddball surroundings of Fremont’s own Portage Bay.
The paintings of Grego Rachko, on display at ArtFX Gallery, incorporate words, patterns and images to explore questions about spirituality, culture, sensuality and community. In addition, save a few (or many) minutes while at ArtFX for exploring the delightful treasures on display, created by dozens of artists and artisans including owners Don Stayner and Doug Stacey.
The artist, Tucker Cornell, on display in May at Pel’Meni Dumpling Tzar, best describes his own works.
His artist’s statement reads, “…I am ten years old. I’ve been making art ever since I can remember. I always tend to paint scenes and poses of many different things I love and sometimes, I try to make things seem different than if you were just looking at them straight on. To me, art is like a doorway into my feelings.” While enjoying Cornell’s paintings, remember you can get $1 off an order of dumplings by mentioning the phrase ‘Make art, not war.’
The Fremont Art Walk has even more to explore. Find out about all the venues, entertainment and opportunities by checking the website before you go – or risk missing out!
See you on the Walk!
