The Seattle Office of Arts & Culture, in partnership with the Seattle Department of Transportation, is seeking an artist for a site-specific artwork, and design elements, for the Aurora Avenue/Licton Springs corridor. Funded by the Neighborhood Street Fund, the artist will work with city department consultants, from design through construction, to develop installations along on Aurora between N 85th St and N 105th St.
The call for artists is open to all professional residing in Oregon or Washington. Artists, or artist teams, with no prior public art experience, or students, are ineligible. Artistic diversity in the city’s collection will be one factor considered by the selection panel. The deadline for this call is 11p on February 7th.
The total budget for this artwork is estimated at $197,400 and will include all travel, taxes and other project costs. Design and engineering of the installation will cost up to $30,000, with $167,400 for fabrication. The art work will include pieces placed in multiple sites along the 20 block stretch of Aurora Ave N. Art strategies that create a distinctive spirit for the neighborhood and transform the feel of Aurora Ave within the urban village are specifically sought. The project is also intended to provide something for viewers traveling at a variety of speeds: walking, on transit, bicycling, standing and driving.
The piece is also intended to counter the auto-centric feel of this corridor, and provide color and vibrancy. The artists will need to address issues of maintenance, including the effects of vehicular exhaust, heavy pedestrian traffic and weather elements, on the completed art installation.
