On March 12th, at 9:30a, author and activist Ashton Applewhite will talk about ending ageism and give a rousing call to action on the need to create an all-age-friendly world.  At Wallingford Community Senior Center, hear this TED Talk speaker talk on her book, ‘This Chair Rocks:  A Manifesto Against Ageism’, and sign copies.

Lively, funny and deeply researched, ‘This Chair Rocks’ traces Applewhite’s journey from apprehensive boomer to pro-aging radical.  The book debunks myth after myth about late life, and explains the roots of ageism, in history and in our own age-denial.  Applewhite writes about how ageism divides and debases, how the myths and stereotypes cripple the way our brains and bodies function, and looks at how it operate in the workplace and the bedroom.  Applewhite finally exposes the cost of the all-American myth of independence, and the portrayal of ‘olders’ as burdens to society.

From childhood on, we’re barraged by messages that it’s sad to be old:  that wrinkles are embarrassing, and older people are useless.  ‘This Chair Rocks’ and its author will shake you by the shoulders, cheer you up, make you mad, and change the way you see the rest of your life.

Meet Applewhite on March 12th, at a continental breakfast at WCSC, and hear her presentation on her deeply researched manifesto – for free.  Just pre-register for the author talk and signing using EventBrite (click here,) or by the WCSC Facebook page.

No matter your age, you won’t want to miss this important presentation at the WCSC!
