Nine teams of fourth and fifth grade students from Seattle Public Schools will compete in the city final of the 20th annual Global Reading Challenge on Tuesday, March 24th at 7p, at the Central Branch of the Seattle Public Library in the Microsoft Auditorium. One teams competing is our own Bazooka Books, from B.F. Day Elementary School in Fremont.
The Global Reading Challenge gathers teams of fourth and fifth graders from more than 54 Seattle Public Schools. Begun by children’s librarian Mary Palmer in 1995, more than 3,000 students now read along with this competition. Teams of students read 10 books between November and early February, when they were quizzed on the content in an in-school competition. The winning teams proceeded to semi-finals, competing among the participating schools, and now those winners move on to the finals.
B.F. Day’s Bazooka Books will be competing with teams from Bryant Elementary, Lafayette Elementary, Dearborn Park International, Leschi Elementary, Orca Elementary, West Seattle Elementary, Broadview-Thomson Elementary, and Greenwood Elementary School.
The public is welcome to attend, and cheer on the teams, at this free event. The Global Reading Challenge is made possible by funding from the Seattle Public Library Foundation, the Norman Raab Foundation, Northwest Literacy Foundation, and the Ballard and Fremont Rotary Clubs.
