Burke-Gilman Trail Closure Under Aurora Bridge Starts Next Monday

On July 8th, WSDOT issued a statement postponing the closure announced previously.

Pedestrians and cyclists are asked to use alternate routes, safely, during a temporary closure of a short portion of the BG Trail.
Pedestrians and cyclists are asked to use alternate routes, safely, during a temporary closure of a short portion of the BG Trail.

Starting on July 11th, a short portion (100-feet) of the Burke-Gilman Trail, near to the Aurora Bridge in Fremont, will close to all pedestrian and cycle traffic.  The closure is scheduled to last until October 31st.

Contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) have been cleaning and painting the historic railings of the George Washington Memorial Bridge (a.k.a. the Highway 99 Aurora Bridge.)  The contractor must place heavy machinery and equipment on the popular cycling trail in order to do the cleaning work.

This specific 100-foot section of the Burke-Gilman will be closed from the crosswalk immediately west of the Lake Washington Rowing Club building (under the Bridge,) to the west-end of the building at 1000 N Northlake Way, formerly the TPN Building.  The closure will also include the U-Park lot east of the Rowing Club.

Cyclists and pedestrians will have detour and alternative options (see the website here,) and they are strongly encouraged to use caution on any route they take through the area.  For special events, including the Lake Union 10K in August and, hopefully, the Fremont Oktoberfest & Brew Ha-Ha in September, the trail will be open temporarily.  WSDOT and the City of Seattle will identify area events and occasions that require use specific use of this portion of the trail.

Patience and understanding during the closure is appreciated.  Learn more about the cleaning, and preservation, of the Aurora Bridge in the Fremocentrist.com feature column from February 2016.  Questions on this closure can be sent to 206/440-4704 or olsenk@wsdot.wa.gov
