Call For Artists – Affordable Housing Development by CCS

Catholic Housing Services seeks an artist to create a permanent display for the new affordable housing building being developed at 4251 Aurora Avenue North (the former Thunderbird Motel site.) The selected artist will create a mosaic/mural for the approximately 15’ long x 5’ tall area above the computer workstations, for a $1,500 stipend to cover time and materials. Preference will be given to members of the Fremont Arts Council, and/or artists who have ties to the Fremont community.

The new building offers 71 studio and one-bedroom apartments as residences for single adults and couples without children who have experienced homelessness. The building amenities include a roof deck for outdoor gatherings & gardening, and a community space on the ground floor with a fitness room, computer workspace, communal kitchen and gathering space.

The art work theme should involve ‘building community,’ and reflect the values of Catholic Housing Services:

Compassion – providing care, understanding and concern for everyone, and honoring the sacredness of each person at every stage and condition of life
Diversity – welcoming the differences of race, culture, faith, and thought with a strong commitment to naming and combating institutional racism and discrimination
Excellence – providing high-quality, professionally competent services with integrity, and best practices
Justice – defending and advocating for the rights of poor and vulnerable people while working toward the common good
Stewardship – prudently developing and using the gifts and talents of employees and volunteers, and caring for the financial resources available to live out this mission

To be considered, entries must be received by 5p on Monday, April 22^nd. Please send a description of the proposed idea (limit 1 page) along with a photo sample of past work and three references to DanW@ccsww.org, or Attn: Dan Wise, Catholic Community Services, 100 – 23^rd Ave S, Seattle, WA 98144. The selected artist will work with the project team to create and install the mural in time for the anticipated building opening, currently scheduled for September 2013.
