All (female) playwrights, and wanna-be playwrights, attention! Submissions are currently being accepted for the Stone Soup Theatre XX Play Fest, until December 14, 2011. Original one-act plays, between 3 to 25 minutes in run length, can be any subject matter or genre will be evaluated in a blind submission process.
The Stone Soup play festival annually features short works by female playwrights, directed by female directors, with casts and characters of both genders, and will be performed on the Stone Soup stages in April 2012.
The 2011 play festival submission process garnered over 240 plays. No submission fee is required, but donations will be gratefully accepted. (Checks can be mailed to Stone Soup Theatre, 4035 Stone Way North, Seattle, WA 98103 to the attention of Double (XX) Fest Literary Manager.)
The guidelines for the 2012 Double (XX) 2.0 Submissions are:
- One submission per playwright ONLY.
- Email submissions preferred: playfestival@stonesouptheatre.org.
- If you must submit by mail, please mail to: Stone Soup Theatre, c/o Double (XX) Fest, 4035 Stone Way N, Seattle, WA 98103
- Plays must be original and unpublished(though fine if they have been previously produced)
- The play should run between 3 to 25 minutes in length, with minimal sets, costumes, and characters. Stages used are extremely intimate: 47 and 65-seat houses, respectively.
- If you are interested in and capable of putting together the production as well (finding directors, actors, and/or costume and props resources), please include this information in the cover letter.
Authors MUST include (incomplete or incorrect submissions will be disqualified):
- Separate cover letter that includes contact information, mailing address, phone number and a brief description of authorial intent.
- Separate cover page that includes the play title, author’s name, character list/description, gender breakdown, genre, brief description of the play
- All mention of the author’s name/contact info MUST be removed from the body of the play (as a blind submission process, with hundreds of submissions, it is not possible for Stone Soup staff to censor that info on all plays…please comply or the play will be disqualified.)
According to Carolynne Wilcox, Office/PR Manager for Stone Soup, last year submissions were narrowed down, due to writing quality, to 60 – 70 that actually were considered for the festival. From there, considerations must be based on the combination of the plays available and avoiding an excess of common themes.
Submission deadline is December 14th, 2011. Stone Soup will make an effort to notify all those who submit of their status by January 20th, 2012. Inquiries, questions and electronic submissions for the Double (XX) Fest can be sent by e-mail to playfestival@stonesouptheatre.org.
Good luck!
