The Fremont Chamber of Commerce general meeting for November, held on the 17th, at Costas Opa contained a lot of food for thought – as well as a lot of good food. The meeting called ‘Breakfast of Shameless Self-Promotion’ gave attendees each two minutes to promote their business, organization and/or cause. Three particular announcements dispelled rumors recently floating around the ‘hood – and proved each rumor, in this instance, to be true.
Coming next March, a tenant for the long-empty retail space at the corner of Fremont Avenue and North 34th Street – once occupied by Baja Fresh. The new tenant – Key Bank, and as Branch Manager Kenneth Ko introduced himself, he promised that the bank intends to be a part of the community. As for the new location, next door to long-established Union Bank, he described it as a good proximity as it creates a banking destination for Fremonsters.
While we lost Rain City Video‘s Fremont location in September, there is still reason to celebrate. Peter Glick confirmed that he has taken over the space, and will open Roxy’s Backdoor (unless someone talks him out of the name, he said) there, hopefully in February. Glick has operated approximately 14 restaurants, he estimated, and swore Roxy’s Diner would be his last – until his employees (who now have profit-sharing in the business) urged him to start another. Roxy’s Backdoor will be a dinner place only, serving ‘funky Fremont fusion,’ whatever that is, Glick said, without a single television in sight – to honor the requests by employees and customers.
Finally, the nursery once called Piriformis, and then Seasons, at 1051 North 35th Street, sold in September and is now Urban Earth. The shop is open, during some construction work intended to improve it, and they offer a selection of winter plants and great Christmas gifts.
