Come Participate – or at least bring snacks…

Ryan Reiter and other volunteers assemble a Fremont Zombies float for the 2011 Solstice Parade Photo by K. Lindsay

Less than two weeks left to the Fremont Arts Council Solstice Parade, and a stroll past the Powerhouse (3940 Fremont Ave N) will offer plenty of opportunities to, “Here, hold this!”

Even if you don’t want to get involved in silk painting, float building, dance routines – or a zombie lurch – consider stopping by to take advantage of the last few workshops.  Learn a new skill, either to participate in the Parade, or simply delight friends and amaze random strangers.

Or support the Solstice Parade in the simplest way possible – dropp of snacks for the hungry, but unrelenting parade volunteers.

Snacks – and materials, money and time – can be donated during open workshop hours between 6p and 9p Monday to Friday, and 11a to 5p Saturday & Sunday.

Consider participating in a workshop (all held at the Powerhouse):

  • Green Hat Crew Meeting – the most important ensemble, that collects donations during the parade to fund…the parade!  Wednesday, June 8th at 6:30p at the Powerhouse.
  • Ensembles 101: A Panel Discussion facilitated by Leslie Zenz, Parade Director.  For those either new to ensemble leadership, or looking to polish their rusty skills.  On Thursday, June 9th at 7:10p at the Powerhouse.
  • Wings & Giant Flowers Second Part, taught by Leslie Zenz.  On Friday, June 10th at the Powerhouse
  • Stilt-Walking: Instructor Allie Kerr.  Learn to walk on stilts – the basics of movement, balance and safety.  On Thursday, June 9th at 6:30p at the Powerhouse
  • Monitor Training – a vital part of the parade, and perfect for those crafts-challenged, or just anxious to see the parade from the inside!  On Saturday, June 11th, at 1p at the Powerhouse
  • Giant Puppets Save The World: Instructors Sarah Lovett and Toni Mikulka will show how to assemble the pieces into a five giant song bird puppets.  On Sunday, June 12th from Noon – 4p at the Powerhouse

Also, the Ice Queens, and their ensemble Ukon Jhula, need folks to be a part of a mobile ritual, and a float focused around a giant, artificial bonfire and honoring the birch trees.  Think keepers of the fire, leaders of the group dance, jesters and facilitators of ritual.  Anyone interested can contact the organizer by e-mail.

There are still dozens of ways to get involved, and make the 2011 Solstice Parade into a personal experience, rather than a passive one.  Get involved!
