Progress Report on Aurora Bridge Safety Barrier

Greg Phipps, of the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), recently indicated an article posted on the WSDOT on-line project summary report, Express Lanes.  It  runs-down, in easy to read language, the progress of the safety fence construction on the George Washington Memorial Bridge, also known as Aurora Bridge.  The article can be seen at www.wsdot.wa.gov/Communications/ExpressLane/2010/10_22.htm

The safety barrier is still expected to be fully installed by the end of 2010, according to the article.  Since last June, crews have drilled almost 2,696 holes for anchor bolts with another 1,272 bolts placed in existing holes, to reduce the necessary amount of drilling into the steel of the bridge.  The article also includes a photo of some of the anchor bolts.

The wait for the barrier to go up has been long, and the article compares the apparent lack of progress to the preparation necessary to paint a room well.  Preparation, and progressing in order through the steps will make the barrier more secure and, potentially, more effective.  The article also mentions repairs being made to 23 corroded areas of the bridge – something those who have walked the sidewalks along the span will know about.
