The Two Bridges Church, and Pastor David Ginn, held the first Fremont Community Dinner on March 6th at 5p in the Fremont Baptist Church social hall, with more to come. The dinners are directed at serving food to those in need, but also in giving all of us a chance to gather and greet one another over a meal. Volunteers are needed to help serve and clean, but also just to sit and talk.
The Fremont Community Dinners are expected to serve 75 to 100 people a week. The Community Dinners will take place on Wednesdays from 5p – 6p, with set-up at 4p and tear down starting at 6p. The biggest need will be to have people at the Dinners who want to eat a meal and make a connection.
However, each week prepared food will be delivered, by the established Community Dinners team, to be served buffet-style. It will need to be served in an orderly and sanitary way, which will take 4 to 5 volunteers. Ideally, double that number of volunteers would make it easier, and allow volunteers to sit down, in turns, to eat and socialize. For those who like to cook, some light prep work may be necessary, and extra desserts or side dishes, gluten-free or vegan options are welcome! A donation of an entire night’s meal – shopped, cooked and delivered – would also be accepted, and can be arranged.
The goal of the Community Dinners is to bring all people together: to make connections, provide a place of peace and increase a sense of community in our neighborhood. To this end, live music and other forms of art, will also be made a part of each Community Dinner. This is not an ‘open mic,’ but an evening of pre-arranged performances intended to create a welcoming atmosphere.
The Community Dinners are open to all ages, with a Kid’s Table set-up with small activities. One or two volunteers would be appreciated to watch over the children, and keep an eye on the area.
Volunteers will be needed to make the Community Dinners a success, but any level of cooperation will do. Those who can come and give their whole evening are wonderful, but even those who just come and eat and be social are appreciated.
Of course, those who could contribute capital to fund this program will also be appreciated! It will cost about $400 a week to feed and provide for this many people. Currently organizers have raised enough for about two months… and they hope to host these dinners through the rest of the year.
Donations of money, either a one-time gift or a monthly contribution, can be made at the TwoBridges website (click here.) All monetary donations are tax-deductible – and every cent will go to the Community Dinners.
