This weekend, get a double-dip of Fremont Outdoor Cinema as the season edges to an end with shows both Friday, August 17th & Saturday, August 18th. On Friday, celebrates the scintillating cinema of director Kevin Smith with an uncharacteristically ambitious double feature of ‘Clerks’ & ‘Mallrats’. On Saturday, ‘Caddyshack’, the classic 1980 screwball comedy about screw-ups, will be screened.
The first feature film of Kevin Smith, ‘Clerks’ was shot in black & white as an independent, low-budget film about a group of underemployed and under-enthusiastic retail clerks – and their customers and friends. Many of the characters from ‘Clerks’ returned in Smith’s second film, ‘Mallrats’, a film about two young men who decide to heal their broken hearts with a trip to the mall. Once there, they engage in sleaze, sex, chases and chaos. In both films Smith can be seen in the role of the wise but nearly wordless ‘Silent Bob.’
Better known, but definitely not any more high-brow, ‘Caddyshack’ remains one of the most brilliantly cast films of all times with Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, Ted Knight, Brian Doyle-Murray and Michael O’Keefe as main character Danny Noonan. The first film by director Harold Ramis (who went on to direct ‘National Lampoon’s Vacation’ and ‘Groundhog Day’,) ‘Caddyshack’ is often referred to as the funniest sports films ever – although its depiction of golf as a sport is as silly as its depiction of, well, everything!
With three movies showing, why not make a summer evening special by sitting out under the stars this weekend at the Fremont Outdoor Cinema? Advance tickets can be purchased to both screenings through Eventbrite – or show up at 7pm to set up your chairs and sit back to enjoy the shows!
