In its bi-monthly e-newsletter, Dusty Strings Music School gave updates on some of their teachers. The list of activities these professional musicians will be about this summer, proves again that Dusty Strings has an incredibly talented, and interesting, staff!
Tai Shan will take a three-week tour of the Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, writing songs inspired by the trip (which also includes performances in historic towns along the way.) Proceeds from the sale of these songs, in 2012, will be donated to the National Wildlife Federation’s Adopt-An-Acre program. Also, donations can be made to the tour through a Rockethub site.
Cathy Britell has organized the live music performances at the Saturday Magnolia Farmers Market, and for those on a road trip from Fremont, there are still great opportunities to hear some quality acoustic music. The performances will be held through October 1st with artists including Eric Madis, Beth Kolle, Barry Pollack, John Leder & Olo Kani, Stuart Williams, Shulamit Kleinerman and Peter Spencer.
In addition, Peter Spencer has released a new album, called “1896”, a pure solo set played on a vintage 1896 Washburn parlor guitar – lovingly renovated by Dave Haxton in the Dusty Strings repair shop.
Shulamit Kleinerman will take her ensemble of child students to perform at the Camlann Medieval Village in Carnation, Washington on July 30 & 31. Celtic guitarist Mary Tulin, along with national hammered dulcimer champion Brenda Hunter, has been playing several shows around the area, including at the Lavender Festival in Sequim. Eric Madis will perform with Blue Madness and his son, Alika, around the region – including at Slider’s Café in Carnation this Friday, July 29th, at 7:30p.
More locally, Kim Rushing will perform on August 13 at Egan’s Ballard Jam House, and August 20 at Manresa Castle in Port Townsend. On August 6th, at 7p, Cathy Britell (and duo partner William Limbach) will perform a benefit concert to assist Joplin, Missouri families, at the Magnolia Presbyterian Church. They will also play in the PNW Folklore Society Coffee House Concert September 9 at 7:30 p.m. at Couth Buzzard Books.
Orville Johnson will perform New Orleans style music on Mondays at 7p, with Casey McGill, at Le Bon Ton Roule, right here in Fremont (no cover!) Johnson also will teach bottleneck slide guitar at Blues Week at Centrum August 1-7, and blues lead guitar and dobro at the Guitar Intensives workshop Aug 8-15 in Bar Harbor, Maine.
While currently sidelined from teaching (due to a chronic illness,) Laurie Riley has kept busy writing four new books: “Techniques for Expressive Playing”, “Anatomy of the Lever Harp”, “Harping with a Handicap”, and “Harp Tunes for One Hand”, all available on-line.
Just to prove, it’s not all music, Rick Fogel will spend the summer boating. Fogel will cruise Penobscot Bay in Maine in a sailboat with some old friends at the end of July, and he and his wife, Marcia Fogel, will take a three-week canoe trip around Desolation Sound in August.
Do not think this will all make things quieter at Dusty Strings Music School this summer. They have many more lessons going on than any summer before, and have introduced several new classes including Beginning Bluegrass Banjo and Beginning Ukulele.
