Right now, through November, get great deals and discounts at Fremont’s only nursery, Urban Earth, as the shop closes for good. Get 50% off all plants, and 60% off everything else, when you stop by to say hi, and a most unfortunate good-bye. Owner Susan Peterson has written that she is, ‘both sad and excited to be selling the nursery,’ and while she doesn’t have a plan for her future, she expects to do some traveling and see gardens in other parts of the world.
In addition to the loss of Urban Earth, on October 31st, Recycled Cycles closes its location next door, after a steep increase in rent. From now on, Recycled Cycles will consolidate operations to their University District location, at 1007 NE Boat St.
On the other side of the neighborhood, Fremont will welcome a few new businesses this fall:
- The Helm – featuring craft cocktails, spirit flights, beer, wine, plus a menu of Northwest inspired foods. Sip and sample, with award-winning cocktails from Bar Manager Kyle Takacs, and small plates by Executive Chef Travis Stewart. From the team at Bold Hat Productions, that brings Oktoberfest to Fremont every year, enjoy the newest 21+ hangout – open Tuesdays to Fridays from 4p to close, and Saturday & Sundays from 2p to close. Located in the former Chillies Paste.
- Outsider Comics & Geek Boutique – opening in the former location of Dockside Medical Marijuana, is a curated comic book store with gadgets and trinkets galore, featuring Northwest artists, and artistic, high-quality book lines than the mass market has to offer. Owner Jill Taplin promises to maintain an on-going pull list, to allow customers to order whatever they need, including a subscriber service. Eventually, she hopes to offer forums and workshops where customers can meet the artists, and learn about building costumes, and other geek extravaganzas. Expect Outsider Comics to officially open in early November, although the kiddies are welcome to stop by on Halloween, from 3p – 6p. Learn more through the Outsider Kickstarter project.
In addition to these two great new North 36th Street businesses, rumor says we’ll soon find fine pizza from a place called ‘China Pie’, being opened by the foodies of Pomerol – and next door too. Even if you can’t stop by and say farewell to our friends at Urban Earth and Recycled Cycles, make sure you check out these new neighbors – and remember to shop (and support) small, local businesses this holiday season!
