Members of the Fremont Arts Council, the unique organization that produces celebration arts events throughout the year, are at work cleaning and maintaining the Fremont Troll sculpture.

The Fremont Arts Council (FAC) commissioned the Troll sculpture, in 1990, through grant money, a juried selection process and hours upon hours of community volunteer involvement.  Created by Steve Badanes and his students, Will Martin, Ross Whitehead, and Donna Walter, the Fremont Troll has become an icon city-wide and a huge tourist attraction.

Recently, vandals have required more than the standard cleaning the FAC provides – thanks in large part to funding given through donations made to a box created by Kevin Pettelle.  The Troll’s single eye (originally a hubcap) has been re-silvered, and a yellow button attached to his forehead removed.  Harder to reach graffiti is still to be addressed.

Unfortunately, criminal destruction has been done to the donation box, and those repairs have begun.  With any funds collected, the FAC is working towards installation of a 24/7 Troll Cam, that would provide visuals on the beloved sculpture for the entertainment of visitors – and potential prosecution of future vandals.

If you can contribute to the Troll Fund, please send a donation to the FAC at their workshop, The Powerhouse.  The address is 3940 Fremont Ave N, Seattle, WA  98103.  Or, give in person!  The FAC will hold its monthly public meeting, the COW, on August 14th at 7p at The Powerhouse – and they will also be accepting donations during the upcoming Luminata Lantern Walk, on September 22nd at 7p at Green Lake.

Public Art requires a commitment from the public for installation and upkeep.  Can you help keep our favorite Fremont curmudgeon hale and hearty andin the best condition possible… for a Troll?
