On Saturday, February 18th, from 2p – 3:30p, Elissa Washuta will present portions of her literary work written during her residency in the northwest tower of the Fremont Bridge last summer. At the Central Library of the Seattle Public Library, in the Microsoft Auditorium, Washuta will discuss her residency with local writer Anca Szilagyi, and present part of the work done during her stay in Fremont.
While using the Bridge tower as a private office, Washuta researched and wrote a piece based on the history of the Puget Sound region paying special attention to our waterways, bridges, and spirits. A member of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe, Washuta has written personal essays and a memoir, and published pieces in ‘Salon’, ‘The Chronicle of Higher Education’, ‘BuzzFeed’ and elsewhere. She has authored two books, ‘Starvation Mode’ and ‘My Body Is A Book Of Rules’, named a finalist for the Washington State Book Award.
The residency project was funded by the Seattle Department of Transportation 1% for Art Funds, administered by the Office of Arts & Culture. The discussion is supported by The Seattle Public Library Foundation and presented in partnership with the University Book Store. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Library events are free, and open-to-the-public, although parking in the Central Library garage will be available, on a first-come, first-served basis, for $7.
