Visitors to our dear Fremont Branch Library, part of the Seattle Public Library system, may notice some maintenance and upgrades going on to the historic mission-revival structure, originally built in 1921. On August 28th, ADA accessibility to the lower-level meeting room will be blocked while the outside stairs get repaired.
The tile roof was recently repaired, and cleaned, so that it is orange once again (instead of grey-black.) The gutters have been replaced, with handsome new downspouts installed. The chimney has been temporarily removed – taken down to the roof line – until a new liner is installed and the stucco surround gets rebuilt to modern earthquake standards.
Overall, the building has been power washed and the stucco repaired in preparation for painting. During painting, grill work and railings will also get a fresh coat.
Most importantly for those of us who use the lower-level meeting room – including ADA visitors – the meeting room doors will be getting an upgrade to official standards, with automatic openers. In addition, a door to the boiler room will be replaced. According to one staffer, the current door would allow someone to break through it with a minimum of force.
All these small repairs and upgrades will result in a better branch library for all, but they do require some patience and understanding while workers attend to the tiny fixes here and there – and block off some access for safety’s sake.
