On Saturday, September 14th, the Fremont Mischief Distillery, with Trident Seafoods and four of the Deadliest CatchTM Captains, hosted a fundraiser for the Northwest Chapter of the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA.) The ‘Captains For A Cure’ party raised nearly $400,000, a record single-event donation.
The ‘Captains For A Cure’ fundraiser was held in honor of Chuck Bundrant, one of the founders of Trident Seafoods, and a friend to many, many of the Captains and others in the maritime community in the Alaskan fleet.
The $400,000 will enable the APDA to continue its work providing information, education, and support to those impacted by Parkinson’s. Most especially, this money will go towards fully funding a research grant in honor of Bundrant. APDA has awarded the Van Andel Institute a research grant to study a mutation in a protein called VPS35 that is known to cause Parkinson’s disease in some families, and a recent study also found that people with an atypical form of Parkinson’s, called Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP,) had a mutation in this protein. APDA feels that further study of this protein can have ramifications for those with PSP.
The fine folk at Fremont Mischief are grateful to everyone who came out, in the rain and during the first Husky game of the season, to celebrate Bundrant and the Captains – and help make this fundraiser a wild, and wonderful, success! For those who may have missed it (or need another taste,) the Storm Tossed Whiskey first released during the ‘Captains For A Cure’ event is now available for tasting, and purchase.
