Soon King County Wastewater Management will begin replacing the nearly 100-year-old Fremont Siphon, a major sewer pipe running under the Lake Washington Ship Canal from Fremont to Queen Anne.  The Siphon carries sewage and storm water from North Seattle, and cities around it, to the West Point Treatment Plant in Magnolia.

Construction on the replacement micro-tunnels will start in early 2015 and is planned for finish in early 2017.  Replacement of the Siphon is a major project, and is expected to disrupt some daily routines along the Ship Canal.

King County purchased the building formerly owned by Praxair, and has plans to demolish it and use the property for the primary construction site and permanent location of the new siphon’s odor control equipment.  County staff will monitor the property regularly and maintain it.

In January 2015, the County will select a contractor to do the Siphon Replacement work, and the contractor will be required to submit a formal schedule of work in early 2015.  A pre-construction community meeting will also be held early in the New Year.

King County recognizes that a big construction project can be disruptive, and the team is committed to being a good neighbor.

For more information, visit the Fremont Siphon Replacement Project website – and find there, beginning in January 2015, a project information hotline phone number.  The County Project Team is also available to present information at community group meetings.
