On September 16th & 17th, Seattle PARK(ing) Day returns, when local people can find creative uses for public street parking spaces, for relaxation and motivation. Right now, through the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods Small Sparks Fund, those who want to create a temporary pop-up park can get up to $1,000 in matching funds to support design and creation of a one-of-a-kind, one-day public space. Deadline for applications, for funds and to participate in PARK(ing) Day, is August 5th.
PARK(ing) Day Plus takes place, internationally, in September, when residents, businesses and organizations demonstrate never before considered ways to use public space and rethink how streets can be used. The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is now accepting applications for pop-up parks around the city, including Fremont. The short, free application can be found on the SDOT website, and submitted to David.Burgesser@seattle.gov
Small Sparks Funds can be used to purchase outreach materials, park supplies, cultural activities, games, Astroturf, and more, to support a temporary park spaces. Grant applications must be submitted via the on-line application site, although questions can be answered at NMFund@seattle.gov or 206/233-0093.
Seattle streets have been part of PARK(ing) Day since 2007, and now it will take place for two days. More information about PARK(ing) Day Plus, along with a photo gallery of past installations, can be found on the SDOT website.
