The Gas Works Park Play Area is scheduled to be closed January 28th & 29th as Wyser Construction crews use a crane to replace the decayed smoke arrestor located in the center of the play area.

The smoke arrestor cap is one of the original pieces left over from the Gas Works plant that sat on the site before it was converted into a park in the 1970s.  A replica cap has been fabricated off-site, and will be installed as one of the final items in the current play area renovation project.

This renovated Gas Works Park play area and viewing plaza actually opened in October 2018.  The renovated area continues to feature industrially-influenced play equipment, as was done in the original park design.  The renovations also improved accessibility to the play area and made much needed repairs to the play barn.

This work is funded by the 2008 Parks & Green Spaces Levy which allocated $1.4 million for the Gas Works Park Play Area renovations.  Listed as a Seattle Historical Landmark and on the Washington State Historic Register and the National Register of Historic Places, Gas Works Park was designed by Richard Haag and opened originally as a park in 1975.
