Today, Seattle Parks & Recreation has announced that the renovated play area and viewing plaza at Gas Works Park has now re-opened. The sand box is expected to open sometime in the next week.
The renovated play area features industrially-influenced play equipment while also providing improved accessibility. The renovations were designed by an in-house Seattle Parks landscape architect, and were built by Wyser Construction. The renovations were done along with necessary improvements to the play barn structure.
The original Gas Works Parks’ facilities were constructed in 1974 (and opened to the public in 1975.) After 40 years of use by area children, and some playful adults, the play area needed repair and renovations. The 2008 Parks & Green Spaces Levy allocated $1.4 million for planning, design and construction of Gas Works Play Area renovations.
Gas Works Park was originally designed by Richard Haag, and was listed as a Seattle Historical Landmark in 1999. Gas Works is also listed on the Washington State Historic Register and the National Register of Historic Places.
