Only 0.4% of female college freshmen plan to major in computer science. The ‘Made With Code’ party, on September 20th at the Fremont Google campus, is an attempt to inspire the next generation of female freshmen to learn code and to see it as a means to their dream careers.
More than 100 teenage girls (13 – 18) will be live coding humanitarian messages about causes they care about during the ‘Made With Code’ party. They will be welcomed, and encouraged, with opening remarks by Seattle Deputy Mayor Hyeok Kim, and have a chance to experience virtual reality with Google Cardboard, as well as meeting female Google coders. After the ‘Made With Code’ party, the young attendees will be invited to take their coding a step further, if they wish, to compete in the Technovation Challenge to create an app that helps solve a challenge in their community.
Made With Code comes from collaborations and using the networks of organizations such as Girl Scouts of the U.S.A., Girls, Inc and Black Girls Rock. Made With Code will encourage girls to consider and explore the computer sciences as they complete possibly their first coding experience.
