On Monday, July 25th, the Fremont Neighborhood Council will meet, at 7p, at Doric Lodge #92, to discuss issues and concerns of residents – including the abrupt declaration by City of Seattle Mayor Ed Murray, last week, dissolving the city’s official relationship – and responsiveness – to the District Council system.
At its July meeting, the FNC Board will discuss what this decision could mean for Fremont and the FNC specifically. The Neighborhood District Council system has given citizens representatives and a formal process for influencing city policymaking, for nearly three decades. According to a city study, the citizens involved and active in this system aren’t representative of their neighborhoods or Seattle as a whole. Instead, Mayor Murray has announced plans for a ‘Community Engagement Commission’ and a complete re-work of the way the city interacts, to get better representation from young people, renters and people of color.
In the meantime, the FNC will continue, hopefully, to represent the residents of Fremont – in part by crafting a response to this decision by Mayor Murray. The FNC Board, at this meeting, will also discuss:
- Plans for a 4-story building to be built at 3838 Aurora Ave N, containing 141 residential units, six live/work units, and parking for 65 vehicles. Robert Humble of HyBrid Architecture will give a presentation on this project, and take questions.
- Development of a Neighbor Project Support Program
- Hear updates on the Helen Tapp Memorial Bench Re-dedication
The FNC welcomes all Fremont residents – of all ages, races, genders, and political persuasions – to bring concerns to the monthly meetings. All Fremont residents are also invited to join this organization. Find more information on the FNC, and membership, at FremontNeighborhoodCouncil.org
