Hopefully you’ve already heard the great news: Woodland Park Zoo resident, Tufani, gave birth to a beautiful baby calf yesterday! Seattle’s tallest baby, the second viable birth of a giraffe at the Zoo since 2013, arrived at 4:03a on June 20th. The gender and name of the baby will be determined in time, and the calf and momma will be off-view to allow a quiet environment for maternal bonding and nursing for a week or two. “Viewing is expected to be sporadic since the family also will have access to the off-view barn,” explained Martin Ramirez, a mammal curator at the Zoo. “It will be a minimum of a few months before the calf is introduced to the African Savanna.”
In the meantime, on Friday, June 23rd, from 6:30p to 8p, Woodland Park Zoo wants to celebrate its neighbors, and our neighborhoods, with its annual Hoot For The Hood event.
According to the Zoo, they are nestled between some of the hippest and most active neighborhoods and they are excited to pay tribute to their supportive neighbors.
Please come mix and mingle, chat with neighbors, meet new friends, enjoy ice cream and explore the new Molbak’s Butterfly Garden and Microsoft Pollinator Patio. Neighbors are encouraged to bring friends and family to enjoy this exclusive event.
Attendees need to RSVP to zoo.org/neighbors, as soon as possible. Event parking is free, as is Hoot For The Hood, and entry is through the WPZ West Plaza. Please come celebrate the Woodland Park Zoo, and all of its neighbors, with this wonderful opportunity to meet with the critters on a summer evening!
