On Saturday, November 18th, at 8p, the Fremont Abbey Arts Center will host a special concert featuring Jason Hawk Harris, with The Novel Ideas and Curtis McMurtry.
Harris has been garnering positive reviews for his new EP, Formaldehyde, Tobacco, and Tulips, released just two weeks ago, including this review from Sean Jewell of American Standard Time: “Harris lets ballads catch fire and heated emotions cool off. His gospel is pretty on point, and the strength of his singing is going to make him an interesting one to watch.” A classically trained guitarist, Harris’ first musical inspiration came from Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’ While a young man, Harris wrote choral pieces and obsessed over American avant-garde composers like George Crumb as his peers spent their time learning to work a stick-shift. A member of the Americana/Roots band, The Show Ponies, Harris laments the lost opportunity to collaborate with his uncle John Harris, who passed away in 1991. “He wrote sad country songs about heartbreak, love and shame,” Harris has observed, “and he sang them like it was the last thing he’d ever do.” Harris offers up his own songs of life’s vagaries, fusing robust musicianship with poetic vision inspired by magical realists.
