Several years ago, City Fruit launched the campaign to Save Seattle’s Apples – to protect the apples and pears growing in orchards and yards across our city. Every time a piece of fruit is thrown away because of pest damage, it is a missed opportunity to enjoy or donate it. Without netting, we could miss out on tens of thousands of pieces that we could enjoy to the fullest.
Apples and Asian pears are at high risk, locally, of damage from apple maggot fly and codling moth. City Fruit has developed a few organic methods of pest prevention that work as a barrier, and look a bit like ‘hairnets.’ Find out more on the City Fruit website.
Since starting Save Seattle’s Apples, City Fruit has netted more than 50 apple and Asian pear trees in public orchards, they’ve distributed large nets and tens of thousands of baggies; and worked with tree owners all over the city.
Whether you own a tree, or not, please consider helping City Fruit to Save Seattle’s Apples by:

With Spring comes longer days, pollinators abuzz, and blossoms a bloomin’ – and the season of pests. The Save Seattle’s Apples campaign provides materials and education for tree owners on how to prevent pest damage, in an organic and environmentally friendly way. With a bit of work, we can collectively produce tons of healthy, tasty produce for our community. Learn more from the Fremont-based non-profit City Fruit website.
