While sad news for Fremont, in April our local adult literacy educational center will be relocating to more spacious facilities in Lake City, at 3200 NE 125th St. Now entering its 30th year, Literacy Source needs more space to better assist adult learners in gaining skills that lead to success for them, and their families.
Literacy Source started on Phinney Ridge in 1986, and moved into Fremont – across from the Fremont Branch Library – when the non-profit organization needed more room for students and teachers.
Now, at Lake City, they will continue their great work, providing free classes and one-on-one tutoring, in:
- citizenship preparation
- basic reading
- basic writing
- basic math
- GED preparation
- digital/computer literacy
- English as a Second Language (E.S.L.)
Literacy Source also offers walk-in, multi-level ESL courses at partner sites in SeaTac, Tukwila, and Rainier Beach.
Any low-income adult who plans to stay in the U.S. permanently is eligible to attend Literacy Source small group classes, as well as use the one-on-one tutoring. All prospective students should attend a New Student Orientation, held mornings and evenings. To sign-up, call 206/782-2050 or go to the Literacy Source website.
Literacy Source will also continue to need volunteers, and New Volunteer Orientations take place on the first Wednesday of every month at 1p & 7p. Register to be a volunteer – and directly improve lives – through the Literacy Source website.
Another great, and relatively quick, way to help Literacy Source – with the move and providing more free education – is to attend the upcoming Annual Literacy Source Breakfast! On May 4th, from 7:30a – 9a, at Seattle Pacific University, hear from students who have changed their own lives and those of their families, along with the 2016 top book picks from Nancy Pearl. Reserve a seat, or just ask questions, at 206/782-2050 or breakfast@literacysource.org
