Literacy Source Seeks Assistance As Its Students Shift To Remote Learning

Students at Literacy Source will be learning remotely for a while longer – and they need help accessing the classrooms. Can you provide some? Photo courtesy Stephanie Felix

The non-profit education center, Literacy Source, seeks to change the futures of those who missed out on basic learning, and immigrants looking to reach opportunities by learning English and other skills needed in our society.

COVID-19 has made the digital divide deeper, and highlighted the inequities among the low-income, immigrant and minority communities.  As Literacy Source has to shift, for the safety of staff, students and its army of volunteers, to remote learning, these inequities have become more pronounced.

Daily the lack of access to technology and the internet impacts Literacy Source students’ ability to learn and achieve their educational goals.  This is why Literacy Source is asking for help providing vital school supplies – specifically Chromebooks and internet access – as they head into a school year unlike any other.

The City of Seattle and the Washington State Board for Community & Technical Colleges have given some support, but the needs of Literacy Source students has far exceeded what they can provide.  Can you help?

While students and volunteers cannot meet currently at Literacy Source, they can still work together through technology. Can you help? Photo provided by Literacy Source

The goal is to raise $10,000 for technology, internet access, and staff time to support students in accessing and using these resources.  Please consider:

  • $50 will purchase a headset and mouse for a student
  • $100 will purchase a hot spot device and internet for a student
  • $160 will cover sign-up costs for a WiFi program to deliver internet access into a student’s home
  • $350 will purchase a Chromebook for a student
  • $600 will purchase hot spot devices for ten students

Technology and digital literacy have sped from luxuries to essential tools during the pandemic, especially for those students trying to better their futures – and those of their families.  Make a real difference, and help address the inequalities of the digital divide, by making a contribution.

Please also, if you can, share this ask with others who might be able to donate.
