On Thursday, August 22nd, the Fremont Arts Council offers the first in its series of public, and free, lantern-building workshops at The Powerhouse. This is the season of preparation for the FAC’s Luminata Lantern Walk on September 21st, and part of it are workshops where anyone, of any age or skill level, can learn to build beautiful, art lanterns.
The Luminata Lantern Walk around Green Lake will feature hundreds of lanterns, many of them hand-made at the FAC workshops, alongside glowing umbrellas, luminous costumes, and lighted art works. The FAC will fund the Lantern Walk by selling art lanterns, and you can help make them.
Bring your favorite translucent tissue papers, or just yourself, to construct and decorate lanterns. From August 21st – September 14th, take part in a workshop where you will learn how to make three lanterns (keep one and donate two more to the cause.) The workshops are free to attend, although a donation of $20 is appreciated for purchase of materials and tools.
Public, free workshops are being held:
- Thu, Aug 22nd from 7p – 9:30p
- Fri, Aug 23rd from 7p – 9:30p
- Sat, Aug 24th from 11a – 2p (pending volunteer sign-ups)

For those who want a bigger challenge than decorating hand-held lanterns, Sarah Lovett will be leading a five-part workshop series on Large Luminary Building, on Wednesdays starting August 21st. Learn how to make a large luminary sculpture using the reed and paper method, to build 2’ x 3’ luminaries. The workshop series costs $40 per person, and advance registration is necessary at luminata@fremontartscouncil.org
Recognize the last days of summer, and the glory of the dark, introspective time of winter, at the annual Luminata Lantern Walk on September 21st at Green Lake. Make it a merrier and more engaging evening by creating some of the beautiful lanterns, for your own use and for the support of the Fremont Arts Council.
