Make A Commitment To Celebrate National Preparedness Month

SNAP (Seattle Neighborhoods Actively Prepare) asks everyone that for National Preparedness Month – and observance of 9/11/01 – consider making a commitment to do one thing in September that enhances your personal level of preparedness, or encourages those around you.

As we have learned from the disasters around the world, it is the collective effort that carries us through.  Some potential ways to increase preparedness:

  • Assemble a kit for home, for the office, for school or for your vehicle.
  • Check assembled kits for updated supplies of water, food, flashlight (and batteries?,) radio (battery powered or hand-crank,) first aid supplies, medications, a multi-purpose tool, sanitation & personal hygiene items, copies of personal documents, a cell phone with charger, family & emergency contact information, extra cash, emergency blanket, and a map of the area.
  • Consider the current needs of all family members, and adjust your kits contents
  • Visit The Red Guide To Recovery for a plethora of preparedness resources
  • Consider attending a Seattle Office of Emergency Management training – including Earthquake Home Retrofit (Oct 20th from 1p – 3p at Beacon Hill Branch Library or Dec 1st from 11a – 1p at West Seattle Branch Library,) or Light Search & Rescue (Dec 8th from 8:30a – 3pm at Southwest Community Center.) To register, contact snap@seattle.gov or 206/233-5076 – or go to the SNAP Training & Events Calendar.
